Volunteer Opportunities (14+ yrs)

Volunteering for SFU Camps offers practical experience in a fun, safe and welcoming environment. Volunteers build leadership skills, meet new people and have a rewarding summer as part of SFU Athletics & Recreation!

SFU Camps recognizes outstanding volunteers, provides reflective evaluations and confirmation letters. Specific Career Workshops will be available and great volunteers are seen as potential camp instructors. SFU Students volunteering is recognised as a Student Ambassador Program here.

Requirements and Application

Volunteers must be a minimum of 14 years of age upon application. 

To apply: complete the online application form and submit a resume including: 

  • Contact information (full name, address, phone, email)
  • Education Level
  • Work & Volunteer Experience
  • Achievements (eg. honour roll, awards, etc)
  • Interests/Activities (eg. sports, subjects, interests, etc.)
  • Skills (eg. computer, languages, special training, etc) 


The minimum commitment is 2 weeks. If accepted, volunteers receive a minimum of 80 hours* (2 weeks of volunteering) and may be eligible for additional weeks.

Select availability carefully as schedule changes may not be accommodated or result in reduced hours.

*Hours are not guaranteed and are based on volunteer assignment and camp enrollment.

Interview and Training

Once volunteer applications have been processed, potential volunteers will be contacted. A 2-hour group interview will take place on a weekday evening.

Applicants are grouped and led through activities to assess leadership, professionalism, communication, and teamwork skills. Expect to have fun participating in ice-breaker games and activities that demonstrate enthusiasm.

If selected, mandatory training includes a campus tour and camps orientation. You will receive establish goals, learn rules and policies, and build relationships with our team of volunteers and staff.

Requesting Reference Letters and Verification

Reference Letters / Job Reference: Please send an email to admin_camps@sfu.ca with the subject line "Volunteer Reference Letter - Your Name". Please include:

  • Your full name
  • Year(s) you volunteered
  • Purpose of the letter (eg. scholarship, job application, university application)
  • Name of scholarship, employer, university, etc.
  • Copy of scholarship requirements, job posting, application or program requirements, etc.
  • Date of when you need the letter / reference
  • Where to send or submit the letter (eg. email address, mailing address) or how we may be contacted to provide the reference (eg. email, phone, online)
Letters of reference must be requested a minimum of 3 weeks in advance.
Activity Verifier: If you wish to have your participation verified for a university or scholarship application, please send an email to admin_camps@sfu.ca with the subject line "Volunteer Activity Verifier - Your Name". Please include:
  • Your full name
  • Year(s) you volunteered
  • Purpose of verification (eg. scholarship, university application, etc.)
  • Name of scholarship, university, etc.
  • How to provide the verification (eg. online, paper form)
