Spring 2023 Semester
SFU Career and Volunteer Services publishes Black Student Career Resources Guide
Created by a BIPOC Career Peer Advisor at SFU Career and Volunteer Services (CVS), these resources are designed to support Black students at all stages of their professional journey, from exploring career options to securing meaningful employment. The peer advisor, Maryam, also wrote about her experience creating the guide.
CVS is also developing more career resource guides for equity-deserving groups, to minimize difficulties in finding and keeping jobs due to systemic barriers and discrimination.

Dedicated Multifaith spaces now accessible at SFU's Surrey campus - August 4
These Multifaith spaces meet the need of having appropriate, permanent spaces for various groups to pray, celebrate mass, study sacred texts and connect to their faith and community.
Towards greater inclusion: SFU rolls out updated personal data form - June 28
The personal data form was recently updated with field improvements and a contextual statement as steps toward creating a more equitable and inclusive university. The form is required for all new employees and personal information changes - if you are using an older version of the form, please download the updated version and begin using it immediately.
New Sports Analytics Award for Indigenous Students in Science - June 28
This new award founded by SFU Statistics alumni will provide financial support to Indigenous students studying full-time at SFU, interested in pursuing Sports Analytics.
Human Resources creates resource of job sites to reach equity-deserving groups - June 28
Looking to hire a new employee? Reach more talent and attract a more diverse candidate pool by advertising on job boards, compiled by SFU Human Resources, which focus on recruitment and inclusion of equity-deserving groups.
International Services for Students launches the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion International Mobility Award (EDI IMA) - June 14
The EDI IMA has been created to increase the participation of underrepresented Canadian students (including permanent residents and students with refugee status) in international learning opportunities.
Surrey Together Against Racism (STAR) anti-racism student discussion - May 19
Strengthen Students in Response to Racism is the second event in our event series, I Can, You Can, We Can, which aims to provide legal and counselling education for fighting against racism. In this event from Surrey Together Against Racism (STAR), led by MOSAIC and supported by the SFU Office of Community Engagement, SFU students discuss practical tools to combat racism.

Vancity Office of Community Engagement (SFU VOCE) and Megaphone present Voices of the Street podcast - April 6
This series continues SFU VOCE’s support of Megaphone’s ethos of empowering marginalized voices through journalism and creative self-expression. The Voices of the Street podcast series enabled storytellers to create their own episodes. Each episode was produced and directed by a Megaphone storyteller with lived experience of substance use, poverty and various other barriers to traditional employment.
Cross-Disciplinary support for individuals with autism - March 30
SFU Education Professor Elina Birmingham and SFU Psychology Professor and clinical psychologist Grace Iarocci are part of a growing group of scholars committed to incorporating the voices of autistic individuals into the research process. Along with their respective teams, they are dedicated to maximizing the quality of life for those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and developmental disabilities through education and community outreach.
Centre for Educational Excellence (CEE) launces first Multilingual Week - February 7-11
English is the primary language of instruction at SFU, but with a diverse population of students, faculty and staff comes a diversity of language. Through a series of presentations and panels, CEE invites instructors to learn new ways to integrate multilingualism into their teaching and academic activities.
Computer Science launches new Diversity Award
Starting Spring 2022, Award in CS Diversity recognizes student project and research work in the school of computing science towards achieving inclusion, diversity, equity, and justice (EDIJ) in Computing Science Research, Educational, and Professional Practices.
