SKYMIONS: MAGNETIC SPIN TEXTURES FOR NOVEL QUANTUM DEVICES

Synopsis

Recent advancements in computational devices demand for a more compact form of solid-state memory. One solution is to store information in naturally occurring circuit elements rather than field-effect transistors. Magnetic skyrmions, or spin vortices, behave as topologically protected quasiparticals in frustrated magnetic materials. Their long lifetimes, stability at room temperature, and well-defined magnetic torque dynamics make them an ideal candidate for information carriers for novel spintronic devices. This may include new types of logic circuits and the highly anticipated racetrack memory for compact solid-state hard drives. This presentation will provide a theoretical overview of skyrmions and conclude with design considerations for future skyrmion-based spintronic architectures in 2-dimentional magnetic materials.
