Event Information

Quantum Canada Open Doors 2025 at SFU on May 3 - everybody is invited!

It’s the International Year of Quantum, celebrating 100 years of Quantum Physics. SFU is part of a Canada-wide event this Saturday, May 3, from 12pm to 4pm.

Join us on Burnaby Mountain to learn about quantum’s history and future, and how it affects your life every day.

You can hear talks by our researchers, try hands-on experiments, see quantum demonstrations, take lab tours, and chat with students about what it’s like to learn quantum physics. You can even join the competition to design the logo for a new quantum project and win a T-shirt or mug with an exclusive SFY-IYQ design.

Schedule:

12 pm - 1pm in room C9000:

Prof. Simon Watkins: Semiconductor Devices: Quantum Physics in Your Life

Come and learn some of the key ideas in quantum physics and how they are related to the semiconductor devices that we all use in our everyday lives. The talk will end with a demonstration involving high voltage and semiconductor materials.

Prof. Daniel Higginbottom: Building the quantum internet

1pm-4pm in room P 9412 (First Year Lab/Research Labs):

Quantum Stations with hands-on activities on Quantum Key Distribution, Classical public-private key cryptography, Quantum Communication in Space, Double Slit Experiment with lasers, and more!  Plus: Lab Tours!
