Cosmology and Particle Physics Seminar
Development of 4D Silicon Tracking Detectors for Future Collider Experiments
Dr. Koji Nakamura, KEK
Location: TRIUMF Auditorium and ZOOM
Synopsis
Future collider experiments will operate at increasingly high energies and intensities, creating challenging environments for the reconstruction and identification of particles. Adding precise timing information to conventional spatial measurements—so-called 4D tracking—can help disentangle overlapping collisions, improve particle identification, and provide new opportunities for measurements and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model.
In this seminar, I will first introduce the physics motivation for precision timing in tracking detectors and discuss the role that 4D tracking could play in future collider experiments. I will then review recent progress in the development of silicon detectors that combine spatial resolutions of order 10 μm with timing resolutions of order 10 ps. Particular emphasis will be placed on capacitively coupled Low-Gain Avalanche Diodes (AC-LGADs), including recent results from pixel prototypes developed by KEK in collaboration with Hamamatsu Photonics. Finally, I will discuss opportunities for further development, including improved timing performance and radiation tolerance, optimization of sensor structures, integration with readout electronics, and the extension of these technologies toward large-area tracking systems. The prospects and technical challenges of realizing practical 4D trackers for future experiments will also be presented.
