Reviewing the Dutchman

Read reviews in the Vancouver Sun and Stir Vancouver for the Vancouver Opera's presentation of The Flying Dutchman, which runs to May 7, 2023, at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre (630 Hamilton St., Vancouver), featuring the SCA's Wladimiro A. Marks at the Digital Politics Summer School

The SCA's Laura U. As the sun disappears and the shadows descend from the mountaintop

While Friedrich Nietzsche's eternal recurrence, “the unconditional and infinitely repeated circulation of all things,” might live up to its promise, for both (or perhaps beyond) good and bad, the SCA's Kathy Slade's exhibition, As the sun disappears and the shadows descend from the mountaintop, which explores this provocative notion (and more!), finishes its run at the Contemporary Art Gallery (555 Nelson St., 
Vancouver) on May 7, 2023.

Shihab's Sister Mother Lover Child at DOXA

The SCA's Nadia Shihab's Sister Mother Lover Child is screening Saturday, May 6 at 12:00 PM at the VIFF Centre (1181 Seymour St., Vancouver) and Tuesday, May 9 at 3:00 PM in the Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema here at SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts (149 W. Adler talks Spring-Summer 2024

The SCA's Barbara Adler is giving an artist talk on Saturday, May 6, 2023, from 3:30 PM – 4:00 PM in Studio 102 at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts (6450 Deer Lake Ave., Burnaby) in support of her exhibition Spring-Summer 2024, which runs in the Shadbolt Centre's Atrium from May 6 – 9, 2023, presented as part of the Burnaby Festival of Learning. Saleken's early retrospective

Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society​ are presenting a FREE retrospective screening of five early short films by the SCA's Corbin Saleken, including Weekend of Terror (1988), Dummy Circle of Death (1995), The B-Team (2000), When They Were Little (2010), and The Vehicle (2012), on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at 6:30 PM in thier Black Box Studio (1131 Howe St., Vancouver). George and Johal in Summer School on Radical Democracy

SCA alumnus and Gallery Gachet Artistic Director Moroti George and SFU's Vancity Office of Community Engagement's Am Johal, who's also a newly-joined Associate Member of the SCA, are both Program Faculty for the Summer School on Radical Democracy, which runs May 18 and 25 (from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM) via Zoom and then June 4 – 10 in person, co-presented by Participedia and SFU's Community-Engaged Research Initiative. Venus Revolution in VSFF

Venus Revolution by Daria Mikhaylyuk's Venus Art Gallery​ project, featuring SCA alumni Eowynn Enquist, Anya Saugstad, Stefan Nazarevich, and Shion Skye Carter and Isak Enquist, Brenna Metzmeier, Sabine Zoe Raskin, Nasiv Kaur Sall, and Ralph Escamillan, is screening as part Vancouver Short Film Festival​'s After Dark Double Block series on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at 8:30 PM at the VIFF Centre (1181 Seymour St., Vancouver), and online from June 2 – 11. C New Critics Award

SCA alumnus Jacquelyn Zong-Li Ross joins Tiana Reid as jurors for C Magazine​'s 2023 C New Critics Award, which is accepting submission to May 30. More HERE.

Rehearsal for a Forest

Branching Songs Ensemble – SCA PhD student Simon Lysander Overstall, with Julie Andreyev, Keira Madsen, and Thomas Myles Feltenberger – performed Rehearsal for a Forest on April 29, 2023, at the New Media Gallery​ (777 Columbia St., New Westminster), presented as a Creative Exhibition Response to the exhibition a B I O T I C with Verena Friedrich, LABOFACTORY, and Finnbogi Pétursson, which ended its run on April 30, as well as to celebrate Earth Day (April 22, 2023). Calderon advocates  

SCA alumnus Davey Samuel Calderon, who's also the Dramaturg, Public Engagement for the Playwrights Theatre Centre (PTC) and a cofounder of the New(to)Town Collective (which also includes SCA alumni Anjela Magpantay and June Fukumura, and Avyen von Waldenburg), was part of a news conference advocating for a new Filipino cultural centre in Vancouver. Kanagawa's first draft and Finding Forgiveness  

SCA alumnus Hiro Kanagawa finished the "first draft of a new play commission for the Banff Centre and the Stratford Festival," marking a very busy five months of activity, which included the Vancouver (January 12 – February 12, at the Arts Club Theatre) and Calgary (March 7 – April 1, at Theatre Calgary) presentation of his adaptation of Mark Sakamoto's memoir Forgiveness, which featured SCA alumni June Fukumura in the cast, Cindy Mochizuki as Video Designer & Animation, Howard Dai as Assistant Director, and Sammy Chien and Chimerik 似不像 as co-Video Systems Designer. We'll share news about Where Waters Meet the Land is Sacred, which appears to be the working title of this new project, when we see it. In the meantime, enjoy this image (and more update info) on Kanagawa's Instagram. Also, marking May as Asian Heritage Month, the Museum of Vancouver has released a "limited-time recording" of Finding Forgiveness, which was a "special preview" of Forgiveness, which was followed by a moderated panel with "playwright and museum educator Carolyn Nakagawa; community elder and educator Vivian Rygnestad; and community elder, writer, curator, and activist Grace Eiko Thomson." Jeffery and Faint's Way Down Bad

Congratulations to SCA alumnus Daniel Jeffery and Peter Faint, whose "dark comedy" Way Down Bad, which "follows a disillusioned young adult who quits his life in the city to go tree planting in the interior of British Columbia where he unintentionally disrupts the social order just as encroaching fires postpone the work, leaving chaos to reign," was selected by Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society for the Main Component stream of Telefilm Canada's 2023 Talent to Watch program.

BLOT in Bucharest

SCA alumnus Vanessa Goodman and Simona Deaconescu's BLOT – Body Line of Thought, this time performed by Simona Dabija and Maria Luiza Dimulescu, is running May 13 & 14, 2023, at the Centrul Naţional al Dansului Bucureşti. More HERE.

Some SCA folks in the 2023 IGNITE! Youth-Driven Arts Festival, which runs May 17 – 20 at the The Cultch's Historic Theatre (1895 Venables St., Vancouver), including alumnus Paige Smith, who's presenting her short film The Big Reveal as part of Solstice Opening Party on Monday, May 15; alumnus Jaqueline Ritter and current student Zoë Braithwaite as part of the Golden Hour program on Friday, May 19; and alumnus Samantha Walters as part of the Solar Flair / The Big Finale / Telling it Bent Showcase on Saturday, May 20. O’Callaghan and Paterson do Encounters – Samplings

SCA alumnus James O’Callaghan is collaborating with turntablist Cheldon Paterson (SlowPitchSound) for Soundstreams' Encounters - Samplings event on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at 8:00 PM, at The Redwood Theatre (1300 Gerrard St. E., Toronto), "remixing from a joint library of their own unique sounds," which will then be shared as "a sample pack so that Soundmakers far and wide will have an opportunity to create their own mixes." Just in time for your Bandcamp Friday considerations, SCA alumnus Scott Morgan / Loscil has issued a "40+ minute render of ALTA," which is a "generative music piece" that was originally presented as part of Soft Launch, a set of 'mini-residencies' at the Libby Leshgold Gallery in March & April, 2023, that also featured performances by the SCA's Ryan Tacata and Justine A. Artist Survival & Healing Fund  

Vines Art Festival, which was created by SCA alumnus and festival director Heather Lamoureux in 2015, is holding a fundraiser for their Artist Survival & Healing Fund on Thursday, May 11, 2023, at 6:30 PM at Heritage Hall (3102 Main St., Vancouver), with the goal of raising $40,000 by July 15, 2023.
