How to declare a concentration

To declare your area of concentration, you must:

  • Be a declared Beedie School of Business Student (pursuing a business major, honours, joint major, joint honours, our double degree program).
  • Have completed 45 units or are set to complete 45 units within the term of application.
  • Students are strongly encouraged to articulate their concentrations in BUS 300: Professional Development – Planning. The course is designed to assist students in making informed decisions around their future career plan.
  • If you are planning to enrol into 300 or 400 level business concentration courses during the upcoming enrolment period, please submit your application within the declaration dates posted below.

Please note: The requirement term of your concentration will always be the term in which you declare your concentration. For example, if you declare your concentration on May 15, 2026, you will be required to follow the concentration requirements in the Summer 2026 SFU Academic Calendar.

What is enrolment priority?

The Beedie School of Business has implemented a concentration enrolment priority system to support student access to required business concentration courses and to support student success within concentration pathways. Students who wish to access 300 and 400-level business courses listed within a concentration must first be declared in the specific concentration before attempting enrolment on their assigned enrolment date and time.

What programs must declare a concentration to access enrolment priority?

The following students are required to declare a concentration to access concentration-specific courses: business majors and business honour students.

I want to explore 300 and 400-level business concentration courses outside my declared concentration. When will I be permitted to enrol?

For 300- and 400-level concentration courses outside a student's declared concentration, a portion of seats may be available during the enrolment period or during open enrolment.

If I do not have enrolment priority for the business concentration course, can I add myself to a waitlist?

If you do not have enrolment priority and attempt to add yourself, you will receive an error message indicating that you do not have access to a reserved course. However, you may still add yourself to the waitlist. If spaces remain at this point, students with enrolment priority will be added first, followed by students without enrolment priority.

Does enrolment priority guarantee me enrolment in courses within my concentration?

No. The enrolment priority system is designed to give priority to students requiring the course for their concentration. Enrolment priority does not guarantee that all declared students within a concentration will be able to access a seat in the course on their enrolment date.

I will have fewer than 45 units completed by the end of this term. Can I declare my concentration?

Students must have 45 units complete or in progress within the term of their application to declare a concentration.

How can I see which concentrations have been declared?

You can view your declared concentrations on your advising transcript. This can be generated on goSFU by following these instructions. Please note that once your concentration is updated in your academic record, you will receive an email confirmation.

If I have accessed courses without using enrolment priority, will I still be awarded a concentration upon graduation?

Yes, if you completed the requirements for a concentration without a formal declaration, you will be awarded a concentration upon graduation.
