The Directors Education Program at SFU Beedie

The Directors Education Program (DEP) program helps directors build on their expertise, strengthen their boardroom skills, and develop the capacity to create and protect value for their organizations. Designed for experienced directors across public, private, not-for-profit and other organizations, the DEP combines interactive learning, real-time case studies, roundtable discussions and insights from leading governance experts.

SFU Beedie School of Business Executive Education is the delivery partner of the 4 in-person modules taking place over 12 days. Over the course of the modules, participants develop the knowledge and skills to navigate complex governance challenges, make more effective strategic decisions and contribute greater value in the boardroom. The program also connects participants to an extended network of leading directors who bring governance best practices to Canada and the business community.

Module I Strategy Oversight & Foresight

A comprehensive overview of the core responsibilities and process of board members, Module I supports director-level participants in developing skills in legal duties and responsibilities, overseeing strategic decisions, as well as managing group dynamics and decision-making in the boardroom.

Module II Financial & Stakeholder Oversight

Focusing on the board’s responsibility to oversee and monitor financial performance, organizational health, and disclosure, Module II utilizes hands-on learning. Group exercises support participants in improving personal effectiveness, and learning to organize and run audit committees.

Module III Value-Added Boards & Organizations

The board’s role in enhancing human performance is the key focus of Module III. Appointing, evaluating, compensating, and renewing the executive team are key skills for this module, as well as understanding the structure of boards through appropriate appointment of skills and experiences.

Module IV Risk Management

In the final module, all learnings across the four modules are integrating into a risk-management framework that helps directors identify and prioritize the wide range of issues influencing their organizations, equipping participants with the tools to manage and influence a wide range of specific tasks and issues across governance and executive management.
