About the Speaker

Dr. Marlow Pellatt, National Ecosystem Scientist at Parks Canada, Office of the Chief Ecosystem Scientist

Dr. Marlow Pellatt has worked at Parks Canada for almost 25 years and is a National Ecosystem Scientist in the Office of the Chief Ecosystem Scientist. He is also an Adjunct Professor in School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University. Marlow is a SFU Alumni (BSc & PhD in Biological Sciences) with strong interest in applying his research to issues facing land and seascape managers.

About the Speaker

Dr. Tom Royle, Postdoctoral Fellow at Department of Archaeology, Simon Fraser University

Tom is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Archaeology at Simon Fraser University. He received his Honours Bachelor of Science in Archaeology from Trent University and Master of Arts and PhD in Archaeology from Simon Fraser University. His resarch focuses on elucidating the relationships between Indigenous peoples and aquatic resources in northwestern and northeastern North America. Through the aDNA analysis of archaeological fish remains, his research seeks to identify the resource management and fishing strategies employed by Indigenous peoples and document the impacts of human activities and climate change on aquatic ecosystems.

About the Speaker

Dr. Tara Troy, Associate Professor at the University of Victoria.

Dr. Tara Troy's research group focuses on how humans impact hydrologic processes, how to incorporate these impacts into hydrologic models, and how to use models to test hypotheses. Prior to joining the faculty at UVic, Dr. Troy was a P.C. Rossin Assistant Professor at Lehigh University, an Associate Research Scientist at the Columbia University Water Center, and received Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Princeton University.

About the Speaker

Dr. Mike Flannigan, Professor & research Chair for Predictive Services, Emergency Management, and Fire Science at Thompson River University

Dr. Mike Flannigan is the Research Chair for Predictive Services, Emergency Management and Fire Science at Thompson Rivers University and the Scientific Director of the Canadian Partnership for Wildland Fire Science. Dr. Flannigan has been studying fire and weather/climate interactions including the potential impact of climatic change, lightning-ignited forest fires for over 40 years.

About the Speaker

Dr. Harald Yurk, Bioacoustian and Biophysical Scientist at Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Harald Yurk joined the Ecosystem Science Division of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) as a physical scientist in 2017 after having worked for a number of years at environmental consulting firms. His current work focusses on impact of anthropogenic noise on the signals of marine mammals and on the degradation of acoustic habitat of all marine life due to anthropogenic noise. Harald has over 30 years of experience in studying marine mammal acoustic signals through his work for DFO, the University of British Columbia and the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre (now OceanWise) as well as other environmental organizations in Canada and the US.

About the Speaker

Dr. Chelsea Little, Assistant Professor at School of Environmental Science and Resource in Environmental Management, Simon Fraser University

Chelsea Little first came into science as a community ecologist, but has since become fascinated in the spatial relationships among different parts of the landscape, particularly in stream and river networks. This has led to a wide variety of student-led research in the Little Ecology Group at SFU, from using game cameras to understand wildlife habitat use, to simulating nutrient dynamics using models, to using ecosystem functions as a way to measure the success of ecological restoration.

Chelsea also enjoys data synthesis, and is currently involved in several international working groups to seek general answers to key ecological questions.
