  • December 24, 2012: John Harriss will be stepping down as Director of the School at the end of 2012. Under John's leadership, the School has developed a very successful undergraduate and graduate program. Our deepest thanks for his hard work and dedication not just in his role as Director but also as a faculty mentor and as a teacher. Alec Dawson will be the Director of the School effective January 1, 2013. Please join us in congratulating and welcoming Alec to the School.

  • Morten Jerven appeared on the Business page of UK's Guardian on November 20, 2012. He discussed his new book, Poor Numbers, a study of the production and use of African economic development statistics. Click here to read the article.
  • John Harriss is featured in the Faculty of Arts and Social Science's 'Engaging Teachers' video.  Watch it here.
  • Tamir Moustafa was elected as one of eight new trustees for the Law and Society Association. The Law and Society Association is the largest interdisciplinary association for sociolegal studies worldwide and the Board of Trustees is its main governance organ.
  • October 26 and 27, 2012: UBC Asian StudiesSFU Development and Sustainability and the School for International Studies present the 2012 South Asia Conference of the Pacific Northwest (SACPAN). Click here to register for the Oct 27 conference.  Conference program available here.
  • Adjunct Professor, Paul Meyer was invited to appear before the House of Commons Standing Committee on National Defence in Ottawa on October 25, 2012. It was part of their study on "NATO's Strategic Concept and Canada's International Defence Cooperation". A webcast (and eventually a transcript) of the entire session will be posted to the Committee's website.

  • September 13, 2012: Simons Chair Jeff Checkel now has two books forthcoming from Cambridge University Press.  Transnational Dynamics of Civil War will be published early next year, while Process Tracing: From Metaphor to Analytic Tool will follow in late 2013.
  • September 7, 2012: Free public lecture - Is India Still Shining? Professor V. B. Athreya will briefly review the history of India's success in raising economic growth rates to compare with those of China, and then consider the reasons for the more recent downturn in the Indian economy.   • September 4, 2012: The School welcomes Jean Allain, the Simons Visiting Chair in International Law and Human Security for Fall 2012.

  • August 9, 2012: Elizabeth Cooper recently co-edited a special issue of theDevelopment Policy Review on the topic of 'inheritance: a gendered and intergenerational dimension of poverty'. In this issue, she co-authored theintroductory essay and has a separate article based on some policy research that she conducted in five Sub-Saharan African countries about women and inheritance.
  • August 1, 2012: The School for International Studies extends a warm welcome to its new Assistant Professor, Christopher Gibson and to its new Limited Term Assistant Professor, Elizabeth Cooper.
  • July 4, 2012: Congratulations, John Harriss and Martha Snodgrass on winning yet another University Publication Fund (Serial Publication Grant) to support the editorial operations of the Canadian Journal of Development Studies.

  • June 14, 2012: Congratulations to IS graduates!  Have a great time celebrating convocation with loved ones.  An especially warm congratulations to Ogake Angwenyi for being chosen to sing the national anthem and to deliver the graduand address.
  • June 8, 2012: Congratulations to graduate students, Angie Hall and Zaira Petruf on winning SSHRC awards!
  • Morten Jerven will be presenting a paper at the Conference on Trade, Poverty and Growth in History in Madrid on May 17-18. He will also present to the Economic History department at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid on May 24, 2012. He is a panelist at the conference organized at the Centre of African Studies (CAS), Edinburgh on June 6-8 and will present three papers and organize one panel at the World Economic History Congress, Stellenbosch, South Africa where his doctoral thesis is nominated as the best work in the 20th century category.
  • May 24, 2012: Warmest congratulations to our director, John Harriss and to Nicole Jackson on winning the 2012 Cormack Teaching Awards at the Professor and Associate Professor levels respectively.
  • May 16, 2012: A very warm welcome to the addition of the Latin American Studies program within the School.  We look forward to collaborating with LAS in its research and teaching capacity.
  • In April and May of this year, Simons Chair Jeff Checkel gave talks on the social and transnational dynamics of civil war at the Balsillie School of International Affairs and the Barcelona Institute of International Studies, and taught an intensive PhD seminar at the Peace Research Institute Oslo.May 17, 2012: The School presents a free public lecture on Buddhist influence on Indigenous Thai Mapping by Barend Jan Terwiel.  For more information, please click here.
  • May 3, 2012: The Vancouver Latin American Film Festival (VLAFF) and SFU's Latin American Studies present a free screening of the documentary, The Coca-Cola Case (VLAFF 2010) as part of the "Global Capital, Global Rights" workshop. The screening will be followed by a dialogue with the director of the film, Germán Gutiérrez.
