Early SFU was shaped by a vision of a new kind of university where thought was free-flowing and lines between the disciplines were blurred. The open format attracted experimental artists such as dramatist John Juliani, Choreographer Iris Garland, and composer R. Murray Schafer, whose avant-garde performances did much to set a revolutionary tone.

In the heart of Surrey, under the Skytrain tracks, is the Black Arts Centre (BLAC), an independent non-profit society, artist-run centre, and cultural hub that supports black art and artists from a variety of disciplines. The space, which is run and supported by many SFU alumni, students and faculty, hosts exhibitions, performances and events, and serves as a space of connection and community.

Since the early ’90s, Jin-me Yoon has used photography, video and performance to situate her personal experience of migration in relation to unfolding historical, political and ecological conditions.
