• Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has been in the news, most recently concerning the Hollywood actors’ strike about the potential impact of AI in filmmaking. Another story involved AI being used to replicate the voice of the Canadian rapper Drake in a track that went viral. These stories raise questions about performers’ rights, and also lead people to wonder: will AI replace artists?

    Many outstanding documentaries and short films by Indigenous filmmakers from across Canada were featured in this year’s 5th Annual Skoden Indigenous Film Festival. These films, split into five programs across the two-days of the festival were all in competition to take home three major awards: Audience-Choice, The Trickster Award, and Best Film.

  • The Nechako Lakes School District (SD91) has one of the largest Indigenous student populations in BC and serves 14 First Nations communities. SD91 is spread out across an area of 70,000 square kilometres and serves just over 4,000 students. The Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology's multi-year memorandum of understanding with SD91 is intended to support teachers and students with increased learning opportunities.

    According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), it is projected that the amount of plastic that seeps into aquatic ecosystems will hit 23-37 million tonnes by the year 2040—more than doubling the 9-14 million tonnes in 2016. To help solve this massive challenge, Simon Fraser University professors Katherine Reilly and Gillian Russell tasked a group of students at Centre for Digital Media’s (CDM) Master of Digital Media (MDM) program to tackle this wicked problem.
