Admission is based on an evaluation of all approved Grade 11 and 12 courses, with greater emphasis on List A courses.

GRADUATE

General SFU Admission Requirements

Read the full list of admission details for post-graduate programs.  

Admission to a doctoral program requires a minimum of:

  • submitted evidence, usually references from qualified referees, of the applicant’s ability to undertake advanced studies in the area of interest.
  • Proof of English Language proficiency
  • a master’s degree from SFU or its equivalent from a recognized institution

OR

  • a bachelor's degree, with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5/4.0, or a grade point average of at least 3.67/4.33 (A-) based on the last 60 credits of undergraduate courses. Students admitted directly from a bachelor's degree must complete at least 50% of the course work units required for the relevant program's master's program if no course work is required as part of the doctoral degree;

OR

  • completion of at least 75% of the course work units required for the relevant program’s master’s program, with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5.

Admission to a master’s program requires a minimum of:

  • a bachelor’s degree from SFU or its equivalent from a recognized institution
  • a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0/4.33 (B), or a grade point average of at least 3.33/4.33 (B+) based on the last 60 units of undergraduate courses. Any graduate work is also considered. Individual graduate programs may set a higher admission grade point average.
  • submitted evidence, usually references from qualified referees, of the applicant’s ability to undertake advanced studies in the area of interest.
  • proof of English Language proficiency

In exceptional circumstances, a student may be admitted with lower formal qualifications when there is significant experience relevant to the proposed area of scholarship.

Admission to a graduate certificate/diploma require a minimum of:

  • a bachelor’s degree from SFU or its equivalent from a recognized institution
  • a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • submitted evidence, usually references from qualified referees, of the applicant's ability to undertake advanced work in the area of interest
  • proof of English Language proficiency

HOW TO APPLY

Once you have decided you want to come to SFU to pursue your studies, you will need to apply and have your elgibility assessed by our admissions department. Here are some steps to guide you through the process:

STEP 1

Step 1: Apply to SFU

Create an SFU account through EducationPlannerBC.

There is a $81.00 application fee payable online.

STEP 2

Step 2: Activate Your Account

You will receive an email with your 9-digit Student Number (User ID Number) and password. Use these to sign in to your Student Account via your Student Centre to activate your account.

STEP 3

Step 4: Submit Your Marks and Documents

All documents must be received by the SFU Admissions Department by the posted deadlines.

To submit required documents including proof of name, citizenship and residency please use the documents via upload form. Transcripts must be submitted by mail.

Application Status, Admission Deposit, and Next Steps

Fall Applications: Completed Fall applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, starting mid-January through to April and you may sign in to your Student Centre online to check the status of your application. Upon admission to SFU, you will be issued a formal letter confirming your offer.

Spring Applications: Completed Spring applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, starting mid-September through October and you may sign in to your Student Centre online to check the status of your application. Upon admission to SFU, you will be issued a formal letter confirming your offer.

AFTER BEING ACCEPTED

ACCEPT YOUR OFFER OF ADMISSION

After you have been given an 'offer of admission', the next step is to accept the offer via goSFU.

PREPARE FOR YOUR FIRST-TERM AT SFU

Once you have accepted your offer, you can then start looking at preparing for your first term at SFU.

  1. Review your program requirements via SFU Calendar
  2. Check out recommended first-term courses
  3. Speak to an advisor about your course plans, transfer credits
  4. Look into related resources such as residence, scholarships and bursaries, and/or study visas for international students.
