Boreal Heartland
Various dishes featured in the Rooted Indigenous Food Program incorporate ingredients sourced from Boreal Heartland, an Indigenous-owned and operated company that sustainably harvests products from boreal forest plants.
Established in 2017, Boreal Heartland operates on the Traditional Ancestral lands of the Woodland Cree, Métis, Plains Cree, Dene, and Saulteaux Peoples. Since its inception, the company’s mission has been to create income opportunities in Northern Saskatchewan, where employment rates remain low, while showcasing the abundance of boreal forest flora on a global scale and promoting environmental and social sustainability.
Boreal Heartland provides gold-standard training for harvesters across different communities and pays for yields by the pound. For many individuals and families, harvesting serves as a livelihood, a first paycheque, or an additional source of income, and Boreal Heartland helps make these opportunities accessible.
Some of Boreal Heartland’s product offerings include teas, seasonings, dehydrated golden chanterelle mushrooms, and bulk herbs. Throughout recipes featured in the Rooted Program, you’ll discover the bold flavours of Labrador tea, alder pepper, rosehip powder, spruce tips, and fireweed.
