Synopsis

Several biological materials have unique electromagnetic and mechanical properties. This has encouraged scientists to create bio-inspired materials that mimic these characteristics for applications. For example, some fish have gill structures that separate small particles of food from water in a crossflow filtration process. That mechanism motivated the design of a novel synthetic material that uses a similar process to clean up oil spills. In this seminar, I will talk about this and other examples of bio-inspired materials and their application.
