SFU Aquatic Centre temporary closure    

Work on the Lorne Davies Complex Renewal Project continues, including Phase Two improvements to the pool and universal changerooms. 

During renovations, significant structural deficiencies were discovered within the dive tank that required a new engineering solution to meet current safety and building standards. Further investigation revealed that portions of the dive tank structure had been compromised and the facility's original 1960s design added complexity to developing an appropriate replacement strategy. 

Over the past several months, SFU has worked with engineers, consultants, Fraser Health, the City of Burnaby and other project partners to develop a solution. A new dive tank solution has now been secured, allowing work to move forward. 
 

While the pool remains closed, the project has continued to advance. New pool mechanical systems and the new universal changeroom are progressing without delay. Much of this work has taken place behind the scenes and is not visible to facility users, but it is essential to the long-term operation of the facility. 

Community members will begin seeing more visible construction activity in the coming months as demolition of the dive tank proceeds and materials are removed from the site.  

Phase One of the LDC Renewal Project reopened earlier this year and includes renewed changerooms with lockers and saunas, varsity changerooms, a dedicated combatives program space and the East Gym. 

SFU understands the frustration caused by the extended closure, particularly for pool users, students, faculty, staff, community members and varsity swimmers who have been waiting to return to the facility.  

As project sponsor, SFU continues to work closely with contractors, consultants, regulatory authorities and other project partners to advance the project as efficiently as possible. Safety, regulatory compliance and long-term facility performance remain the primary drivers of project decisions and will not be compromised to accelerate reopening. 

The LDC Renewal Project remains an active priority investment and aquatics programming, camps, clinics, competitions and community swimming opportunities will return once construction is complete and the facility reopens.
