Get involved

Volunteers and other team members play an important role supporting the campus community during emergencies and in proactively promoting emergency preparedness. Learn about volunteer opportunities and complete the online form to get involved.

Emergency Volunteer Team (EVT)

The EVT is a team of volunteer students, staff, and faculty that provides short-term assistance to the SFU community during an emergency incident. This includes sharing information with the public about the emerging situation, situation updates, and providing information about available resources including dining services, lodging, first aid and other specialized needs within the SFU community.

The EVT also promotes awareness about emergency preparedness at annual SRS events including ShakeOut BC and WinterReady.

Orientation

Orientation sessions are conducted throughout the year and will cover the EVT roles, activities, use of radios, call-out procedures and more.

First aid training

First aid training is also available to EVT members. There is one first aid course per year. Dates vary and will be provided to our volunteers as they are scheduled.

Building Evacuation Teams

Under Worksafe BC and Fire Code regulations, SFU is required to have teams of personnel that perform monitoring, mentoring and assisting actions to building occupants that enhance life safety and support the mitigation of fire hazards in the workplace.  This includes sharing fire safety information and reporting and facilitating correction of unsafe conditions, as well as performing area sweeping duties to enhance the evacuation procedures when the building alarms ring.
