Planning for your Learning & Development

Where to focus your learning and development?

We encourage everyone who works at SFU to plan your learning and development so that it’s meaningful and impactful.  Planning learning and development is a shared partnership and responsibility between a manger and employee.

Your development goals in your Performance Development Plan can help focus your learning activities.  If you don’t have development goals, some questions to consider are:

  • What skills, knowledge and abilities do I need to successfully accomplish my work goals?  What do I have already?  Where are the gaps?
  • What are my strengths that I can build upon?
  • What are my areas for growth?
  • What development would help me be more effective and successful in my role/work?

Ideas for Learning and Development

When people think of professional development, they usually think of formal learning such as workshops, courses or conferences.  However, learning and development can also happen in informal ways, such as discussions amongst colleagues, independent reading or job shadowing.

Here are some ideas:

  • Reading articles and books
  • Watching webinars

  • Job shadowing a colleague at SFU or beyond
  • Taking on a project that stretches your learning
  • Working with a coach
  • Volunteering
