At SFU we offer video conferencing as an effective way to connect with those in different locations using virtual spaces for meetings, lectures and webinars. The tools available for videoconferencing are Zoom, BlueJeans & Blackboard Collaborate

Zoom

Zoom is a videoconferencing platform that enables real-time collaboration between individuals and groups, it can be used for meetings, webinars, lectures and tutorials. SFU Zoom is available to staff, faculty and students for free. Features include:  

  • Video and/or audio meetings by computer or phone.
  • Screen sharing with annotation. 
  • Virtual whiteboard and other collaboration tools. 
  • Integration with popular calendar applications such as Outlook

Zoom Meeting

Zoom Meeting is best suited for collaborative meetings, where all participants can share their screens and chat via video and audio.

Who can use?

  • Faculty
  • Staff
  • Students

Recommended for

  • Meetings < 300 participants
  • Virtual activities that encourage interactions among participants
  • Classes involving group discussions, e.g. tutorials

Zoom Webinar

Zoom Webinar is best suited for large events or classes where the host and panelists prefer more control over the crowd. It allows view-only attendees to minimize interuptions. Attendees can interact via Q&A, chat and polling.

Who can use?

  • Faculty (upon request)
  • Staff (upon request)

Recommended for

  • Classes or events < 500 participants
  • Large virtual activities with minimal interactions among participants
  • Events involving panelists
  • Classes that don't require interactions among students, e.g. lectures

BlueJeans

Who can use?

  • Faculty
  • Staff

Recommended for

  • Meetings less than 25 participants

BlueJeans is a videoconferencing platform offered in partnership with BCNET and available to staff and faculty, it is not a tool for lecturing regardless of class size. Features include:

  • Does not require an account to be used. 
  • Video and/or audio meetings by computer or phone. 
  • Screen sharing with annotation. 
  • Virtual whiteboard and other collaboration tools. 

Blackboard Collaborate 

Who can use?

  • Faculty

Recommended for

  • Teaching
  • Courses in Canvas

Blackboard Collaborate is a web conferencing tool integrated into Canvas to provide instructors with tools for online teaching. Features include:

  • Setting up breakout rooms.
  • Adding PowerPoint presentations to Canvas. 
  • Updating your course outline. 
  • Post online simulations or demonstrations for discussion.
