Math Catcher supports Aboriginal elementary students’ education in math and science through on-campus workshops in math and science and school visits to urban and rural schools around BC. The program introduces mathematics and science to Aboriginal students through the use of First Nations imagery and storytelling. Match Catcher has produced animated films in several First Nations languages (Blackfoot, Cree, Squamish, Heiltsuk, Nisga’a, Sliammon, Halq’em ́eylem, Hul’q’umi’num’, and Huu-ay- aht) as well as bilingual picture books in Blackfoot/English, Cree/English, Squamish/English, Nisga’a/English, and Sliammon/English.

This is a month-long, Burnaby campus camp for Aboriginal high school students who would like help preparing for the upcoming school year. Cultural, recreational and social activities are a major part of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

High school students who learn differential calculus can claim credit at a BC university by taking the Calculus Challenge Examination. Recognized by SFU, UBC, UVic, UNBC, TWU, and the Ministry of Education, the exam is prepared by university faculty, based on the Provincial Calculus 12 curriculum.  

The Calculus Challenge Exam is no longer hosted by SFU and is solely hosted by UBC.  Further info can be found HERE

The SFU Math Camp for Students is an invitation-only opportunity for high school students to see and experience hands-on exciting, engaging, and challenging mathematics presented by mathematicians from our department. Held during the last week of June, or the first week of July, SFU hosts a weeklong day camp for students from grades 9 and 10 (along with keen grade 8 students who are familiar with grade 9 math). Students must be nominated by their teacher to attend this camp.

A multi-year, multi-level program geared towards promoting diversity and inclusivity in STEM. Highlights of the program include:

(a) An interactive math day camp for high school students from groups that are consistently under-represented in the STEM fields. The aim is to increase their representation and retention at post-secondary institutions in STEM fields. More on eligibility and application process below.

(b) A national summer school that inspires talented undergraduate women to specialize in a mathematics-related field at the graduate and post-graduate level and consider career options focused on science and mathematics. The summer school will also serve as a sister program for the math camp. More on eligibility and application process below.

(c) A creative forum for mentorship and leadership at all levels, where the undergraduate participants learn to serve as mentors for their younger counterparts.

This conference brings together mathematicians, mathematics educators and school teachers from all levels. We work together to narrow the gap between mathematicians and teachers of mathematics, and between those who enjoy mathematics and those who think they don't.
