Welcome to a “special” summer semester

May 06, 2020

Welcome to the summer semester at Simon Fraser University – a semester unlike any we have experienced before. Although we begin the term at a time of uncertainty (with classes taught remotely and campus activities restricted), we at SFU remain committed to doing everything we can to ensure that educational quality is maintained and that students have the support required to succeed.

If you are a returning student, I want to acknowledge the challenges you faced last semester when classes and services were moved online in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Thank you for your understanding and resilience as we have worked through these changes together. I am also grateful for the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff in swiftly adjusting to this new reality.

If you are a new student, staff or faculty member this semester, a warm welcome to the SFU community. I am confident you will find our Engaged University ready to inspire you – if only by virtual means this semester – as you embark on your educational adventure.

I encourage new students to take part in Welcome Day to meet your professors, classmates, and the staff who are here to support you during your time at SFU. The Student Services website is available to help you navigate through the term and through the current health crisis. Services include emergency financial aid, professional counselling, spiritual support, help with technology, and employment assistance.

We have also recently launched SFU CAN (“SFU COVID-19 Action Now”) where students can make connections, access resources, and learn about volunteer, co-op and work opportunities relating to COVID-19 response and recovery.

We have seen our world turned upside down in recent weeks. But we have also seen an inspiring effort on the part of SFU community members to protect, support, and find new ways to engage with each other.  By continuing in this effort, I am confident that our students will continue to benefit from rewarding personal networks, enriching educational experiences and sustaining community connections.
