The records series consists of digital recordings from all CCTV (closed-circut television) security cameras located across all SFU campuses.

Records include raw digital footage. Note, in cases where footage is saved to document an incident, captured footage should be placed in an incident case file. Retention of captured footage then follows the retention guidance found in RRSDA 2009-001, Incident Reporting Records.

Retention rationale

A total retention period of up to "60 days prior to destruction" is sufficient to allow for incidents to be reported to the Campus Safety and Security Department and relevant CCTV footage to be captured and saved with incident reporting records if required.

Retention and filing guidelines

The system that records camera footage is currently set to continuously overwrite footage after either 30 or 60 days. Campus Safety and Security Services is in the process of updating the CCTV technology, after which time all cameras will be capable of recording and retaining videos for 60 days. Once the new technology is in place, this schedule should be reviewed and updated as required.
