Featured in The Tyee and available for viewing on YouTube, World Literature professor and program director Melek Ortabasi’s video, “The Ban,” tells how SFU students, faculty and staff have been directly affected by U.S. president Donald Trump’s executive order of Jan. 27, 2017, banning travel to seven Muslim-majority countries.

When Ortabasi decided to film the short video, she invited her students to share their experiences. World Literature students Yaqeen Abdulzahra and Samaah Jaffer, who also majors in International Studies, answered the call, as did Mike Despotovic, a World Literature alumnus.
