2016 Cormack Teaching Award Winners

The Cormack Awards were created in 2010 to recognize excellent and innovative teaching within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences; nominations may come from students, colleagues, Chairs or Directors. The four winners will receive their awards at the Faculty's autumn reception in October 2016. See videos of their talks here.

Congratulations to the winners and to all of the nominees for 2016!

Dr. Lara Aknin, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, has among the highest student ratings for teaching in her Department, and teaches both large undergraduate classes and small graduate seminars. A researcher of well-being and prosocial behaviour, her instruction is focused on student learning in the classroom and beyond, with a particular goal of long-term learning.

Dr. Gregory Dow, Professor, Department of Economics, studies economic prehistory and is described by students as a "phenomenal instructor" and an "amazing communicator". He seeks to show students how to apply what they learn about economics in their lives, encouraging debate and participation in the classroom as well as teaching students about social science research.

Dr. Sarah Walshaw, Lecturer, Department of History, teaches African history in the classroom and in field schools in Tanzania. In addition to archaeobotanical research, she is known as a teacher and mentor who equips students with practical tools for future success; she views teaching as a collaborative practice in which instructors and students are both learners and educators.

Dr. Richard Wright, Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, is coordinator of Psychology's Vision Lab, studying factors that affect the efficiency of visual processing, including attention and distraction. He uses his work on attentional processing to inform his teaching and keep students engaged, with students calling his courses "amazing" and "exciting and innovative".
