It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maureen Covell, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Political Science at SFU, on June 23, 2026.

Simon Fraser University recently collaborated with the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria to organize the Pacific Political Science Undergraduate Conference on Saturday, May 2, at SFU Harbour Centre. The first event of its kind, the conference was organized by SFU International Studies Student Association and their journal, Confluence, as well as Political Science Student Unions of all the three universities and featured research published in their respective undergraduate journals.

SFU Political Science graduand and Convocation speaker Alexander Hodaly believes the purpose of education is not simply to describe the world, but to teach us how to engage with its most challenging aspects. “The Department of Political Science helped build my foundational understanding of the world’s most protracted conflicts,” he says. “It also gave me the analytical tools to engage with it all.”
