This blended summer session course will introduce students to several key texts in the history of western political thought and philosophy. Through a close study of these texts, students will explore different understandings of nature, justice, virtue, the good, freedom, democracy, power, authority, legitimacy, equality, rights, obligation, and other political concepts. Necessarily, this course will uncover the elitist, classist, sexist, racist, and ableist underpinnings of much of the western intellectual tradition. This course will help students think critically and write analytically about political institutions and life.

Social data and digital technologies are rapidly transforming politics and society, including election campaigns, how governments make policy, the targeting of consumers, and our interactions and connections with one another. The goal of POL 390 is to offer a hands-on introduction to data science with an emphasis on data visualization for political and social analysis. Data science is a growing field and this course will help you develop employable skills.

Register in POL 390 today.
