International Students

Simon Fraser University’s Department of Political Science offers the NATO Field School and Simulation Program in collaboration with the NATO Defense College in Rome and Canada’s Delegation to NATO. We welcome graduate and undergraduate students from NATO member-states to apply to our innovative field school. Our seven-week summer program presents attendees with an opportunity to study abroad and gain real-world experience in international relations and diplomacy. Students who complete our field school program will earn 12 undergraduate or six graduate political science credits.

Accommodation and rooming arrangements

The first three weeks of the program are held at Simon Fraser University and accommodation is not provided for this portion of the program. Arrangements are made for participants to stay at SFU Residence on campus and if they are offered a spot in the program, the field school staff will provide them with general information about SFU Residence options. Alternatively, students can arrange for accommodation themselves off-campus.

All other accommodations in Canada and Europe are included in the program fees and more information will be provided upon acceptance.

Dress code

Most days in Canada and Europe require a business formal level of dress, as NATO Field School events involve high-profile speakers and visits to high-level organizations (NATO HQ, SHAPE, Task Force Latvia, Latvian MOD, NATO Stratcom, etc.). Some field trips will involve walking outdoors in military facilities, requiring weather-appropriate wear.

Credit transfer

Qualified students from institutions other than SFU are eligible to apply. Visiting students must arrange for transfer credit with their home institution, as well as a transcript after completion. Students can access a Visiting Student Application when they begin their Field School Application. Both applications must be complete and submitted by the 2021 deadline (to be announced later).
