A Path for Students of Past Cohorts to Complete Your MPub
We now have an update about the process for returning to complete your Master of Publishing.
As a reminder: in September 2025, we introduced some revisions to the Master of Publishing degree requirements, including the elimination of the project report. Instead, students are required to complete a 2,000-3,000 word report that summarizes and reflects critically on work they have undertaken in the form of either an internship or a self-directed publishing project or a 10,000 word research project option comprising two extended essays or a single article-length work. See our website for updated capstone options.
Moving forward, students who completed their required coursework for the Master of Publishing but did not complete their project report will have the option to re-apply to the MPub and enroll to complete the 2,000-3,000 word report or the 10,000 word research project under the supervision of a current faculty member.
Applications for re-admission to the Master of Publishing will open in Fall 2026, with the earliest possible start date being January 2027. To apply for re-admission, a one-time application fee of $112 for applicants with Canadian transcripts and $160 for applicants with international transcripts is assessed. If you are not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you will be required to apply for a student visa if you are accepted for re-admission.
The application for re-admission will consist of a 1-2 page Statement of Aims and Objectives summarizing your publishing and/or work experience since you completed your coursework and the reasons for your reapplication (i.e., why you want to complete your MPub). This statement should also indicate whether you intend to complete the 2,000-3,000 word report or the 10,000 word research project.
Tuition for the capstone course will be $2,521.92 per semester ($420.32 per credit). Students will be re-admitted for a maximum of three semesters, but all students, especially those choosing the shorter report, should easily be able to complete the requirements within a single semester.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to pub-info@sfu.ca if you have any questions!
