Master of Publishing Streams

Collaboration in action

When completed as a full-time degree, the Master of Publishing takes four semesters or sixteen months. The stream options outlined below show full-time completion options, but students may take longer than four semesters if they choose a part-time option. 

Trade Publishing

 Prepare yourself for a career in print and digital publishing, with courses in editorial practice and theory, production management, book design, marketing, and more. Put your skills into action with our immersive book publishing simulation course and conclude your degree with a professional placement in the publishing industry.  Recommended electives for this stream include PUB601: Editorial Theory and Practice, PUB602: Design and Production Control in Publishing, PUB605: Book Publishing Simulation, and PUB655: Online Marketing for Publishers

Scholarly Communication

Take a deep dive into the processes behind scholarly communication, from peer review and editorial strategies to the tools and services that create the scholarly record. Get hands-on experience working with experts in open access publishing and making research public. Recommended courses for this stream include PUB611: Making Knowledge Public, PUB 603: Journal Management and Editing, and PUB604: Technologies and Infrastructure for Academic Publishing.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship 

Get the skills and mentorship you need to start your own publishing enterprise. Take courses in project management, hands-on digital technology workshops, and an immersive media start-up simulation. Finish your Masters degree with your own start-up already underway! Recommended courses for this stream include PUB606: Media Start-Up Simulation, PUB648: Publishing and Social Change, and PUB638: Design Awareness in Publishing Processes and Products
