Hours of construction
Construction within residences follows the city of Burnaby construction bylaws. Constructions hours will be as follows:
- Monday-Friday: 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
- Saturday: 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Burnaby Noise or Abatement, by-law: Number 7332 - page 5: 15.(1)
Subject to subsections (2) and (4), no person shall carry or cause to be carried on any works in connection with the construction, reconstruction, alteration, repair or demolition of any building, structure, improvement or other thing
- (a) before 7:00 a.m. or after 8:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday;
- (b) before 9:00 a.m. or after 8:00 p.m. on Saturday;
- (c) at any time on Sunday or any statutory holiday.

Your safety
Due to various construction activities around the residence area, there are a number of construction zones that will impact pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
- Please be cautious and aware around these construction zones
- The Fire Lane is closed to pedestrians and limited to authorized service and emergency vehicles only.
- Watch for hazards and obey signage and/or instructions from flag persons
- Do not enter any closed areas
If you have trouble finding or require assistance to and from Residence, please contact Campus Security at 778-782-7991 to request a Safewalk.
East and West Towers
Crane Installation
Purpose: The crane will be lifting large air handling units to the roof of both buildings and all work should be completed by 1:00pm.
Timeline: Friday November 19, 2021
Impact on Residents:
- Expect some noise.
- Normal hours of work will be 7:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Blind Installation Inspection and Repairs
Purpose: A contractor will be arriving to check the installation of the blinds in all dormitory rooms.
Timeline: Thursday November 18, 2021 - Friday November 19, 2021
Impact on Residents:
- We will need to be in your room for a short period of time to check the installation of the blind and perhaps reinforce the hanging mechanism.
- Please try and clear the area in front of your window to allow the work to proceed quickly.

North Towers PJH, BRH, SBH
Water Damage Repair
Purpose: To remediate and repair the damage caused by water to the bathrooms
Timeline: Completed by mid-December.
Areas Affected: BRH West Wing
Impact on Residents:
- Bathrooms will need to be closed.
Shell House
Installation of Amazon Locker
Purpose: Installation of an Amazon locker.
Impact on Residents:
- None, building is unoccupied.
Hamilton Hall
Rebuilding of Planter
Purpose: Rebuilding the planter as part of enhanced public realm project.
Timeline: Ongoing
Hours of Work:
- Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm (except holidays).
- Occasional Saturdays 9:00 am to 5:00pm.
Areas Effected: In front of HAM
Impact on Residents:
- Pedestrian routes will be disrupted at times.
- To ensure their safety, residents should watch for and comply with all barricades, signage and verbal or written instructions related to this project.
West End of Fire Lane Competion
Purpose: Completion of the west end of fire lane.
Timeline: Fall 2021
Hours of Work:
- Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm (except holidays).
- Occasional Saturdays 9:00 am to 5:00pm.
Areas Effected: Fire lane at Hamilton Hall
Impact on Residents:
- Pedestrian routes will be disrupted at times.

McTaggart-Cowan Hall
MCTAGGART-COWAN HALL EXTERIOR ENVELOPE RENEWAL
TIMELINE: BUILDING CLOSURE MAY 2023 – AUGUST 2024
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Built in 1986 McTaggart-Cowan Hall is now 36 years old. Extensive interior renovations were conducted 4-6 years ago to update washrooms, kitchens and the fire suppression system. The roof was replaced in 2020/21. The buildings primary enclosure areas (e.g. Windows and walls) have reached the end of their effective service lives and require replacement. The focus of this project will be on the vertical envelope and supplementary mechanical ventilation of the building. In addition, the implementation of this envelope renewal strategy will bring about positive impacts towards reducing energy usage, improving user comfort, reducing greenhouse gas emissions as well as helping maintain a consistent architectural standard across the campus. During this extended closure of the building, Resident room furniture will be replaced, and flooring will be repaired.
Hours of Work: Incompliance with Burnaby Noise or Abatement Law (link already exists on the page)
Expected Noise and Disruption: Residents in buildings near the area will be impacted by noise. There may be periodic disruption to traffic along Residence Lane and Terry Fox Lane
New Roof Drains
Timeline: Fall 2021

- The roof area of Mctaggart-Cowan Hall
Impact on Residents:
- Potential closure of some washroom facilities and meeting rooms
Meeting Room, Bath Room Stalls & Shower Closures
Timeline: Begins September 01 2021 and will run approximately 3 weeks.
Hours of Work: Construction around residences follows the city of Burnaby construction bylaws. Constructions hours will be as follows:
- Monday-Friday: 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

- MCH 408 Shower stall
- MCH 422 Accessible Shower
- MCH 428 Meeting Room

Impact on Residents:
- Expect some noise,
- You will see a variety of trade’s people in all areas of the building.
- Normal hours of work will be 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday (except holidays). Work will occasionally occur on Saturdays between: 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.
Townhouses
Grounds Repairs
Repairs and upgrades to the Townhouse greenspaces.
Timeline: Ongoing
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm (except holidays).
Occasional Saturdays 9:00 am to 5:00pm.
Areas Effected: Exterior greenspaces, wooden retaining walls, asphalt pathways and concrete stairs.
Impact on Residents:
- Pedestrian routes will be disrupted at times.
- To ensure their safety, residents should watch for and comply with all barricades, signage and verbal or written instructions related to this project.
Laundry Rooms
Timeline: Summer 2021 - Fall 2021
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm (except holidays).
Occasional Saturdays 9:00 am to 5:00pm.
Areas Effected: SQU QUE QUA and COW
Boiler Repair
Purpose:To complete the repairs of the boilers, they will have to be turned off and cooled down.
Timeline: Friday, November 5, 2021
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm (except holidays).
Occasional Saturdays 9:00 am to 5:00pm.
