Air Quality Advisory Issued in Metro Vancouver

Two wildfires burning near Harrison Lake are producing smoke and contributing to degraded air quality and hazy conditions, which are worsened in combination with hot weather and local emissions. Be cautious of the conditions and postpone or reduce outdoor physical activity. Remain in large indoor spaces with air conditioning when possible.

Planned Power Outages happening on June 2, 3 and 4.  Read the following for more information and what to do during a power outage.

Friday, June 2 Power Outage – Courtyard Residence Only

  • When: Friday, June 2, 2023 approximately 4:30 am until 7:30 am
  • Estimated Duration: 3 hours
  • Where: Courtyard Residence
  • Impact to residents: The Front Desk will be operating on limited services during the power outage. Limited services will include: lockouts, wellness checks, noise complaints, phone calls and check ins.
    • All other requests including mail pickup, payments, applications concerns and emails will resume once regular service is able to continue after 7:30 am
    • Wi-Fi will be out for all of Courtyard Residence
    • Elevators will run in limited capacity

Saturday, June 3 at 9:00 pm – Sunday, June 4 7:00 am Power Outage (Main Power Outage) – Multiple Residence Buildings

  • When: Beginning Saturday, June 3, 2023, at approximately 9:00 pm
  • Estimated Duration: 8-10 hours
  • Estimated End of Outage: Between 5:00 and 7:00 am
  • Buildings Impacted
    • Hamilton Hall: no power, no WIFI, no elevator service – emergency lights in hallways only
    • Townhouse: no power, no WIFI
    • Shadbolt / Barbara Rae / Pauline Jewett: no power, no WIFI, limited elevator service – emergency lights in hallways only
    • Shell House: Power but NO WIFI
    • East and West Towers: Power but NO WIFI

Sunday, June 4 Power Outage – Courtyard Residence Only

  • When: Sunday, June 4, 2023 estimated to begin between 5:00 and 7:00 am
    • Please note: This power outage will occur immediately following the main power outage that starts at 9pm  on June 3. This means that the power outage could begin earlier than noted or later than noted depending on the progress of the main power outage.
  • Duration: Estimated to last between 1 and 2 hours
  • Where: Courtyard Residence
  • Impact to residents: The Front Desk will be operating on limited services during the power outage. Limited services will include: lockouts, wellness checks, noise complaints, phone calls and check ins.
    • Only emergency building power will remain. This includes building fire systems, some lighting in hallways and powered front doors
    • Wi-Fi will be out for all of Courtyard Residence
    • Elevators will run in limited capacity

How to Navigate a Power Outage

  • Keep your mobile phone fully charged and conserve its battery by turning off unnecessary features
  • Maintain a portable battery charger or a power bank to charge your phone when needed
  • Limit opening your refrigerator to preserve the cold temperature and prevent food spoilage
  • Keep a flashlight or portable LED light handy to navigate darkened areas safely (If you need a glowstick you can visit the front desk to grab a glow stick to use)
  • Open blinds during the day to allow natural light to brighten your space
  • Exercise caution while moving around the building, especially in stairwells and dimly lit areas
  • Be cautious of potential hazards such as loose cables or obstacles in the dark
  • Building features that rely on electricity will not function during a power outage (for instance auto flush toilets will not work during a power outage)

ALERT: The Resience and Housing Front Desk will be operating limited services on certain days in January 

Due to staffing updates, the Residence and Housing office (A1001 building) will be operating limited services only from 11:00 p.m. – 6:30 a.m. on the following nights:

  • Wednesday, January 19, 2022
  • Thursday, January 20, 2022
  • Friday, January 21, 2022

During this time, there will be no mail pick-up or housing services. The front desk will be limited to noise complaints and lockouts.
There may also be infrequent periods with no staff at the front desk.

Scheduled Power Outage on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. 

During the recent snowfall, critical power lines on Burnaby Mountain sustained damage from a fallen tree. In order to complete the necessary repairs, SFU has scheduled an emergency campus-wide power outage at Burnaby campus on Wednesday, December 22, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

During this time, Facilities Services will be shutting off power to all Burnaby campus buildings, with the following exceptions of (UniverCity, Animal Care Facilities, Discovery 1 & 2, Water Tower Building)

HOW TO PREPARE/WHAT TO DO:

  • Keep a flashlight nearby as electric lights and power outlets will be out of service
  • Keep windows and doors closed to maintain heat
  • Charge your devices (cell phones, laptops, tablets, etc.)
  • Turn off or unplug electronics
  • Wear extra clothing or curl up in a blanket to stay warm
  • Head over to Cornerstone for shopping and Wi-Fi access   
  • Take a trip off campus for the day
    • Go holiday shopping
    • Try to catch a movie
    • Check out a city library

     

SERVICES THAT ARE IMPACTED:

  • Wi-Fi internet service will be interrupted and Cellular networks services may be impacted
  • Hot water will be limited
  • Building heating and ventilation will be impacted
  • Laundry rooms will be out of service
  • All elevators will be out of service
  • Refrigerators and ranges (stovetops and ovens) will not work
    • The food in your refrigerator will be fine if you open the door as infrequently as possible
  • Hallway emergency lights will remain on in North Towers, East/West Towers, McTaggart-Cowan Hall and Hamilton Hall
  • Townhouses – all lighting will be impacted.  Glow sticks are available in the Residence Office to light internal stairwells and bathrooms.

Scheduled Wifi Outage on Saturday, July 3 

On Saturday, July 3, 2021 from 8:00am-4:00pm, there will be an SFU Burnaby campus wide WiFi outage. IT Services will be performing a planned network equipment replacement. There will be no on-campus access to the internet outside of residences from any SFU wired or wireless connections during the outage window. Please check your SFU email for details.

  • This service SHOULD NOT affect any of the Residence buildings WiFi Eduroam connection.
  • This service WILL interrupt the Residence and Housing Front Desk services during this time. 
    • Limited services include provision of phone services, lockouts and answering questions/inquiries only. 
    • Don’t forget to have your keys on you at all times.

SCHEDULED RESIDENCE-WIDE POWER OUTAGE ON SUNDAY, MAY 2

SFU Facilities has scheduled power outages to improve Residence and Housing electrical systems. Power outages will impact all Burnaby campus residence buildings for 2 - 2.5 hours and are scheduled on Sunday, May 2, 2021. Please check your SFU email for details. Note: A second set of power outages is planned for the following week.

Temporary Relocation of the Cannabis Station

Starting Wednesday, June 24, 2020, the Residence Cannabis-Smoking Station, currently located between McTaggart and Shell House, will be temporarily relocated to the West end of the Residence Main Parking Lot.

January 2019

Starting in January 2019 Residence and Housing will start recruiting for Student Staff for 2019 – 2020 academic year. This is an exciting time for us. The process kicks off as part of the Residence and Housing's WHERE? Employment 2-day pop up event taking place January 9th and 10th in the AQ. The event will showcase positions from across the department.

New Laundry Service Provider

From August 20 to August 27, new laundry machines will be installed and the existing ones will be removed. Due to the changes in the service provider, existing laundry cards will no longer be valid after the new machines are installed. We recommend that all students use any remaining balance on your existing laundry cards before the machine removal date of August 20, 2019.
