Simon Fraser University’s Community-Engaged Research Initiative (CERi) invites you to participate in a two-day national dialogue exploring the evolving role of the public university in a time of intersecting crises. Climate disruption. Democratic strain. Widening inequality. Public health challenges. Under-regulated AI. Financial pressures facing post-secondary institutions. In this moment of polycrisis, what is the responsibility of the public university? This gathering convenes scholars, community leaders, policymakers, and students to reflect on how higher education can act not only as a site of analysis, but as a civic institution embedded in the communities and futures it helps shape.

Join us for a day of dialogue focused on one of our region’s most pressing concerns, affordable Indigenous housing. Convened by Simon Fraser University’s Community Engaged Research initiative (CERi) and Indigenous Studies, this gathering welcomes policy makers, developers, community leaders, researchers, financial agencies and others committed to thoughtful action Together we will share knowledge and experiences and identify ways to support ongoing positive change. The dialogue will feature Indigenous-led developments, aimed at addressing the over-representation of Indigenous people in the city’s homeless population. Among the key projects discussed will be the 6,000-unit Sen̓áḵw development led by the Squamish Nation, the Ho'-kee-melh Kloshe Lum project on 1015 E Hastings, Chief Leonard George House and projects by societies like Lu'ma Native Housing and DTES Land Trust.

SFU’s Community-Engaged Research Initiative (CERi) is hosting its 2025 Workshop Series at 312 Main in Vancouver, featuring a lineup of in-person sessions from September 2025 to March 2026. Open to the public, these 90-minute workshops bring together scholars, practitioners, and community members to explore critical aspects of community-engaged research, including collaboration, ethics, positionality, decolonization, knowledge mobilization, and community partnerships. Led by experienced facilitators such as Dr. Stuart Poyntz, Dr. Dorothy Christian, and Dr. Hannah McGregor, the series provides practical insights, tools, and dialogue to strengthen equity-centered research practices. Participants can attend individual sessions that align with their interests, with limited seating available.
