Newsmaker of the Year Award
The FASS Newsmaker of the Year Award recognizes continuing FASS faculty members who, based on their research expertise, have demonstrated an impact on advancing public knowledge and shaping public opinion in the previous calendar year.
One Newsmaker of the Year award may be presented annually, depending on the nominations received. The award recipient will receive an award plaque as well as $500 towards professional development. They will also be honoured at the FASS Fall Reception.
How to nominate
- Only nominations from department/program Chairs or Directors are accepted. Previous recipients may be nominated again if at least four years has passed since their previous award.
- The nominator is responsible for ensuring the nominee is aware and approves of the nomination.
- Nominations must be submitted electronically via the FASS Newsmaker of the Year Award nomination form. Upon clicking the link, please log in with your SFU personal computing ID to access the form.
- Prepare your supporting documents before clicking on the link to fill out the nomination form as it is a requirement for submission. The supporting documents include:
- A letter of nomination that provides a full overview of the nominee's news and media impacts and how they have met the award criteria
- The nominee's full academic CV, demonstrating how their media and news impact relates to their research expertise
- A brief qualitative statement (maximum 500 words) from the nominee about their news/media presence and impact. Links to news stories and social media are encouraged.

Nominations open
The nomination period for the 2026 FASS Dean's Medal opens Monday, March 2nd.
Deadline to submit a nomination is Friday, May 15th at 11:59pm PT.
Criteria
- Must be a continuing FASS faculty member
- Based on their research expertise, has demonstrated an impact on advancing public knowledge and shaping public opinion in the previous calendar year, measured by the reach and frequency of media coverage (i.e., local, national, international), including: written articles and op-eds for media outlets, radio or television appearances, social media profiles, blogs, etc.
Adjudication
Nominations received by the submission deadline will be evaluated by the Research Advisory Group which is chaired by the Associate Dean, Research & International. The committee will make recommendations to the Dean’s Executive Council who will make the final decisions.

- Nomination submission period: March 2 - May 15
- Awards will be conferred at the FASS Fall Reception: October 22
