Two FASS students are finalists in the SSHRC Storytellers Challenge. Bryce Westlake (School of Criminology) and Maria Zakharova (Department of Political Science), are among the top 25 finalists in a national competition launched in November 2013, in which the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) asked postsecondary students to demonstrate—in three minutes or 300 words—how SSHRC-funded research is making a difference in the lives of Canadians.

Those in the top 25—including SFU's Westlake and Zakharova—will receive a prize of $3,000 plus registration and accommodation at the Congress 2014 of the Humanities and Social Sciences to participate in a research communications workshop.

On April 8, SSHRC will profile five finalists each week via the SSHRC website, social media and the SSHRC YouTube channel. The top 25 finalists will compete to become a Final Five Storyteller and present to a VIP audience at SSHRC’s 2014 Impact Awards ceremony in fall 2014.
