Jordan Abel Wins the 2017 Griffin Poetry Prize

June 09, 2017

Congratulations to Jordan Abel, winner of the Canadian 2017 Griffin Poetry Prize. Abel, a Nisga’a poet and PhD student in the Department of English, won for Injun, a poem that confronts issues of race, colonialism, and the representation of Indigenous peoples.

In his acceptance speech, Abel declared the $65 000 prize "a win for all the people who fought, and continue to fight against, appropriation and against the architecture of colonialism. . . As a poet who writes about the difficult issues of racism, colonial oppression and intergenerational trauma, I never thought this would happen."
