Traffic notices

Watch for equipment and construction crews at the areas listed below and always obey signs, traffic controls, and traffic control personnel. Please remember that the speed limit in construction zones is 30km/h.

Jan 12th - 25th Temporary West Parkade North Access Lane Closure & Detour 

When:

January 12th - 25th (2023)

Where:

1. The West Parkade north access lane off University Drive West

2. The access ramps into and out of the West Parkade via Gaglardi Way

1. Parkade North Access Lane

The north access lane between University Drive West and the West Parkade will be temporarily closed to accommodate Residence Phase 2 construction activity that will include the installation of a traffic island, trenching across the lane for fire hydrant relocation, the installation of new curbing and asphalt paving. Other activity includes the installation of the overhead parkade height clearance bar. Construction activity will see large constuction vehicles, equipment and crew working in all areas of the lane, hence, the purpose of a full closure to the public.

2. West Parkade Detour Route

During the temporary closure of the north access lane motorists can access the parkade via the Gaglardi Way entrance-exit ramps. The recommended driving route is outlined with red arrows on the map above. Temporary use of the northbound Gaglardi Way (optional) route shown on the map will be available while the north access lane is closed but to avoid congestion and impact to transit bus routing on Gaglardi Way motorists are encourage to use the University Drive West detour route upon arrival to campus. PLEASE NOTE: Do not make a U-turn at the north end of the Transportation Centre, from the east side of the TC to the west side of the TC, as this is not permitted. Contravension of the posted no u-turn sign can result in enforcement action being taken.

Apr 18th 2022 - Early 2023 University Drive East & Nelson Way Temporary Roadway Interruptions

UPDATE 21 December 2022

Work along University Drive East (UDE) and the northeast corner of the intersection of UDE and Burnaby Moutain Parkway will continue into 2023. This includes the installation of lighting infrastructure, pedestrian path completion and landscaping. Traffic lane closures, lowered speed limits and pedestrian detours can be expected.

When:

April 18th 2022 - Early 2023.

Where:

1. University Drive East between Gaglardi Way and University High Street

2. Nelson Way between University Drive East and Greenhouse Lane

Work to be completed:

Paving and upgrade work on University Drive East and Nelson Way

- Road surface paving

- Installation of street lighting

- Sidewalk widening  

Expected Interruptions:

1. The section of University Drive East between Gaglardi Way and Tower Road will be subject to traffic pattern changes, lessened to one lane in each direction with potential for alternating single lane traffic during the work day.

2. Delays and detours can be expected along University Drive East and Nelson Way.

2. Nelson Way, located between University Drive East and Greenhouse Lane, will be subject to lane closures, temporary traffic pattern changes and single lane alternating traffic.

3. Access to and from south parking lots and the south parkade will be subject to temporary access interruptions and potential temporary closures.

4. Sidewalks and trail access routes along University Drive East and Nelson Way will be subject to temporary closures.

5. Cyclists and pedestrians will be subject to detoured routing. 

COMMENT:

1. Be prepared for delays if your normal travel route includes University Drive East, Nelson Way and connecting roads. Consider using alternate routing during the project period.

2. Allow for extra travel time.

3. Changes and progress updates will be posted during the project period. Check back for updates.

4. Transit bus routing and schedules are not expected to be affected by this project.

5. Emergency response access routing to all areas of campus and UniverCity will be available throughout the project period.

Dec 2020 - Early 2023 University Drive West and Parkade Temporary Roadway Interruptions

UPDATE 9 November 2022

Activity related to the construction of the Residence Phase 2 building continues. Traffic lane closures and single lane alternating traffic can be expected along University Drive West and the West Parkade north access lane through to the completion of this project.

When:

December 2020 - Early 2023

Where:

1. The section of University Drive West between Gaglardi Way (north end) and West Campus Road.

2. The north access road to and from the West Parkade.

3. Visitor North (VN) parking lot.

Work to be completed: 

Construction of SFU Residences, Phase 2.

Expected Interruption:

1. Traffic delays can be expected along Univesity Drive West when construction vehicles are entering and exiting the construction site.

2. Alternating single lane traffic control can be expected along University Drive West.

3. The West Parkade access road will be lessened to two lanes (1 lane IN and 1 lane OUT).

4. A crosswalk at the intersection of University Drive West and West Parkade access lane will be temproarily removed for the construction period to accommodate construction activities.

5. The elevated sidewalk on the west side of the West Parkade access lane will be removed and reconfigured as part of the project.

6. A section of the VN parking lot has been blocked off and will be used as a construction staging area. Public parking in the fenced area will not be available during the project period.

Comment:

1. Transit bus routing and scheduling is not expected to be affected by this project.

2. A temporary (separated) pedestrian path will be set up along the east side of the West Parkade access lane to maintain pedestrian routing between the parkade and the sidewalk north of the West Mall Centre. Pedestrians are asked to cross University Drive West at marked crosswalks.

3. During the work day, traffic control personnel will be on site to assist cyclists and pedestrians with detour routing.
