Community-Engaged Climate Research Idea Jam
Time: 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM PT
Djavad Mowafaghian World Art Centre, SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts
A Research Idea Jam hosted by SFU Community Engaged Research Initiative (CERi) and the UBC Centre for Climate Justice
EVENT DESCRIPTION:
Are you a community organization interested in better understanding how climate justice intersects with your work? Or an environmental organization curious about how community research can better support your work? Or a student/faculty/researcher looking to make connections with community organizations working on climate justice?
If so, join us for an energizing afternoon that explores the possibilities for interdisciplinary, cross-institutional and impactful climate justice research with communities. This half-day workshop brings together local organizations/groups, researchers, students, and community members to generate ideas that will inform a ‘climate justice research shop’ - a service model where community organizations can work with students and/or faculty members to develop research projects that address the community's research needs for free or at a reduced cost.
Specific themes we will focus on throughout the day include:
- Indigenous-led climate research and action
- Labour and climate jobs
- Poverty and economic (in)justice
- Youth climate action
- Housing and Transportation
- Health and well-being
These themes build on the key insights and best practices that surfaced at Community-Engaged Research and the Climate Crisis symposium (October 2022) by exploring possibilities for future research collaborations.
The ideas generated at the jam will inform efforts at both SFU’s Community-Engaged Research Initiative (CERi) and Centre for Climate Justice at UBC to create more accessible pathways for community-engaged research and to better support climate action at the intersection of multiple oppressions and crises.
CERi is a proud supporter of the critical research program, community-centred climate innovation. This program supports SFU in engaging in global challenges, is a priority area within SFU's 2023-2028 Strategic Research Plan, and is an action item in our sustainability and climate action plan.
