Community Partner: BC Lung Foundation
Location: 312 Main, Vancouver, BC / remote
Job Description:
312 Main Research Shop is a program within SFU CERi that facilitates collaboration between SFU graduate students and non-profits groups. It is focused on supporting research projects that provide plain-language answers to community-driven research questions at low or no cost to the community partner. 312 Main Research Shop is supported by Mitacs and Vancity Community Foundation.
This research assistant position supports a project led by the BC Lung Foundation that aims to better understand and address the impacts of extreme heat and fire smoke events on priority populations in the Metro Vancouver region. This project builds off of work done in 2023 where an in-person workshop template was created at BC Lung that teaches people how to help themselves during periods of extreme smoke and heat. The goal of this year's (2024) summer project is to expand the program to include priority populations in Metro Vancouver and ensure that the workshop model is adapted for and responsive to the needs of people living at the intersections of poverty, medical vulnerability and poor quality housing. This RA position involves creating and co-hosting educational workshops, engaging with at-risk communities, conducting research on community navigation of extreme climate exposures, and making recommendations to local governments and community service providers to enhance resilience. Experience with social media content creation and communication or graphic design is an asset.
This position will run May-August, 2024. It requires a commitment of at least 15 hours per week. Hourly rate is $30-35/hour commensurate with experience.
Candidates from equity seeking groups, including Black, Indigenous and racialized people, people facing accessibility barriers, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people and people from low-income backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
**This position is only open to current SFU graduate students.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the design and implementation of research methodologies, including surveys, interviews, observational field notes, and workshop interventions.
Coordinate workshops, including scheduling and recruitment of participants, facilitating sessions and administering surveys and consent forms
Engage with priority populations and community service providers to co-create resources and tools that build capacity to navigate extreme weather events.
Work with team members to purchase research equipment, set up materials logistics, move equipment and take part in set and clean-up of workshop sessions
Contribute to the development of research reports and presentations summarizing findings, outcomes, and recommendations, edit manuscripts and create infographics or other visual knowledge product outcomes
Generate content for social media channels, including audio for podcasts, and video for Instagram, TikTok and other platform
Qualifications:
Graduate degree (MA or PhD) in areas including Communications, Film, Political Science, Education, Psychology, and Interactive Art and Design or similar. MA students who are near completion and current PhD students are encouraged to apply.
Experience with quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis methodologies.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders and facilitate workshops and focus groups.
Experience working with vulnerable populations and community organizations is an asset.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary research environment.
Holding a valid Driver’s Licence
Commitment to social justice, equity, and environmental sustainability.
