Chair's Message

Welcome to the Department of Earth Sciences!

Despite the trying times we are all experiencing, the members of the Department of Earth Sciences have worked incredibly hard to create a welcoming, albeit mostly online, environment for students and researchers. The vast majority of our undergraduate and graduate courses have moved online and while it can never replace the face to face experience, we have done our best to ensure that students continue to progress through their programs.

Undergraduate students can choose from two main streams: Environmental Geoscience and Geology. Both streams lead to professional registration with Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC), and exciting well-paying careers. Our undergraduate program also has a strong field component with numerous field schools and trips linked to a variety of required and optional courses; we will be running these trips and field schools in the Spring and Summer semesters of 2021 by following enhanced safety protocols.

Our international reputation for excellence in scientific research allows us to mentor the varying research interests of both undergraduate and graduate students. While much of this is also online for now, we continue to push the boundaries of science through our broad and multidisciplinary research.
