Major: Earth Sciences, Geology Stream
What got you interested in Earth Sciences?
I have been interested in natural sciences and systems for as long as I can remember. Before attending SFU, I trained as a Mining Technologist and worked as a technician within a geology department. During that time, I discovered how much I enjoyed working with geological data and concepts, which motivated me to pursue further studies in Earth Sciences.
What is your Stream? Why did you choose this?
I completed my degree in the Geology stream. I particularly enjoyed using the microscopes in the introductory petrology course, and I wanted to take all three advanced petrology courses offered: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Because of this interest, the geology stream was the natural choice for me.
What has been your favourite course so far?
There were many great courses throughout my degree, but one of my favorites was Groundwater Modelling. The course focused on using industry software to model groundwater flow. By the end of the course, we had compiled a 50-page report using real groundwater data. It was a challenging and rewarding learning experience that gave us practical skills used in industry.
What has been your best learning experience?
The field schools and field trips throughout the program were excellent learning experiences. During EASC 306 – Field Geology 2, we worked in small groups over several days to produce a regional geological map of an area north of Osoyoos. To create the map, we made many stops in the field and gradually learned more about the geology of the region at each location. By the end of the field school, we were able to apply much of what we had learned in other Earth Science courses, along with our field geology skills, to produce a regional geological map based on our observations.
What advice would you offer current/future students?
Start labs and assignments early and try to find one or two classmates who work in a similar way. That way, if you get stuck on something, you can talk it through together. This helps prevent getting bogged down in small details and makes school more enjoyable. Also, if you get stuck on an idea or concept, move on to something else and come back to it later with a fresh perspective.
What have you been doing since graduating from SFU EASC?
Since graduating, I have been working in the mineral exploration industry. I am continuing to build experience while learning from more experienced geologists. My goal is to continue developing both my technical skills and practical industry experience.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
Returning to university as a mature student was a really rewarding experience for me. The EASC program provided a strong balance of classroom learning, lab work, and field experience, and the field schools in particular were highlights of the program. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to have studied Earth Sciences at SFU.
