Reconstructing paleoearthquake and paleotsunami records in northern Cascadia at Port Alberni

The Cascadia subduction zone has not experienced any large earthquakes in over 300 years. The majority of our knowledge comes from studying prehistoric events in the geologic record. My research involves using grain size, microfossil, and geochemical proxies to investigate geologic records from Port Alberni’s salt marsh to identify prehistoric earthquake and tsunami events. This research aims to develop a detailed record of earthquakes and tsunamis in northern Cascadia to improve hazard mitigation and preparedness of coastal communities in British Columbia.
