Declaring your program

Looking to major or minor in economics? Learn about our requirements and how you can declare your economics program.

Once you have met the requirements below, you can declare your economics program by contacting the undergraduate advisor at econ_advisor@sfu.ca

If you are experiencing difficulty in fulfilling the requirements, please contact the advisor as they can help you with identifying any potential deficiencies in your course of study, and suggest a plan of action. 

Major

Students may apply for entry into the economics major program once the following requirements are met:

  • You have completed ECON 201 with at least a C- grade
  • You have met the minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) requirement of 2.5
  • You have met the SFU ECON GPA of 2.0 or above
  • You have completed 30 units

Extended minor

Students may apply for entry into the economics extended minor program once the following requirements are met:

  • You have completed ECON 201 with at least a C- grade
  • You have met the minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) requirement of 2.3
  • You have met the SFU ECON GPA of 2.0 or above
  • You have completed 30 units

Minor

Students may apply for entry into the economics minor program once the following requirements are met:

  • You have completed ECON 103 and 105 with at least a C- grade
  • You have met the minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) requirement of 2.3
  • You have met the SFU ECON GPA of 2.0 or above
  • You have completed 30 units

Honours program

To be approved by the Department of Economics as an honours or joint honours student, you must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0, and have completed the ECON required lower division courses with a grade of C- or higher.

If you are unsuccessful in your application, you may appeal the decision to the Undergraduate Chair, or re-apply the following semester.
