Dean's Medals

In recognition of academic excellence in research, teaching, and service, with an emphasis on significant contributions while in position in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at SFU, up to three Dean's Medals and one Lifetime Achievement Award will be awarded annually to tenured faculty.

Award recipients shall receive $1,000 towards professional development and a medal recognizing their achievements. They will also be honoured at the FASS Fall Reception.

How to nominate

  • Only nominations from department/program Chairs or Directors are accepted. Please keep to no more than two nominations annually. Award adjudication will take into consideration career stage. 
  • The nominator is responsible for ensuring the nominee is aware and approves of the nomination. 
  • Nominations must be submitted electronically via the FASS Dean's Medal nomination form. Upon clicking the link, please log in with your SFU personal computing ID to access the form. 
  • Prepare your supporting documents before clicking on the link to fill out the nomination form as it is a requirement for submission. The supporting documents include: 
    • The Chair's letter of nomination providing a full overview of the nominee's overall record of achievement in all three categories of scholarship, teaching, and service
    • The nominee's full academic CV 
    • A brief qualitative statement (maximum 500 words) from the nominee about their scholarship, teaching, and service 
    • Any other information/documentation specifically relevant to the case

Timeline

  • Nomination submission period: March 2 - May 15
  • Awards will be conferred at the FASS Fall Reception: October 22

Nominations open

The nomination period for the 2026 FASS Dean's Medal opens Monday, March 2nd.

Deadline to submit a nomination is Friday, May 15th at 11:59pm PT.
