SFU-EXETER ACCELERATED LAW

Admissions
Supplemental Application
High school applicants to the SFU-Exeter Accelerated Law Program (ALP) are required to complete a Supplemental Application as part of the admission process.
Note that the ALP Supplemental Application is separate from the EducationPlannerBC (EPBC) application. After you submit your SFU undergraduate application through EPBC and pay the application fee, a link to the ALP Supplemental Application will automatically appear in your goSFU admission checklist.
The Supplemental Application is your opportunity to help us get to know you beyond your academic record and to tell us why you’re excited about joining the SFU-Exeter Accelerated Law Program. This will be taken into consideration alongside your academic profile.
What is included in the Supplemental Application?
The online Supplemental Application includes:
A recorded video response
A written response
The Supplemental Application questions will be available on this webpage when applications open on October 1.
How do I access the Supplemental Application?
- Submit your application to Simon Fraser University through EducationPlannerBC and pay the application fee
- You will receive an email to activate your account on goSFU. A link to the ALP Supplemental Application will be added to your goSFU account as part of your admission checklist.
- Once the link is available in your admission checklist, you can access and complete the Supplemental Application by logging into goSFU.

Assessment
What is assessed?
The Supplemental Application is designed to help us understand your interest in ALP, your experiences and aspirations, and your readiness to participate in an accelerated international program.
Reviewers consider the quality of your responses, including:
Understanding of the program and motivation: Your understanding of the distinctive features of the ALP and why it appeals to you
Reflection and learning: What you have learned from your experiences and the insights you demonstrate when reflecting on them.
Goals and future success: How your interests, experiences and aspirations connect to your future studies in the ALP.
Communication: How clearly and effectively you communicate your ideas in both video and written responses.
Race, ethnicity, religion, sex, age and all other protected grounds as defined by section 8 of the B.C. Human Rights Code are excluded from the evaluation.
Each Supplemental Application is independently reviewed by two assessors using a standardized assessment framework. The resulting assessments are considered alongside the applicant’s academic record when making final admission decisions.
Applicants who require application accommodations are encouraged to contact the SFU Centre for Accessible Learning as early as possible to discuss available supports and ensure that approved accommodations can be arranged in a timely manner.
What does a strong application include?
- Authentic responses
Be genuine and use your own experiences and perspective. There is no single type of experience, achievement or background we are looking for. - Specific examples
Where appropriate, use specific experiences and examples to support what you tell us. Focus on what you did, what you learned, and how those experiences have shaped your interests, goals or approach. - Reflection and insight
Don't simply describe an experience. Take the opportunity to explain what you learned from it and how it has contributed to your development. - Clear communication
Take time to organize your thoughts and make sure your responses directly address the questions asked. Aim to communicate your ideas clearly, concisely and effectively.
For the video response, focus on communicating your ideas clearly and naturally. Professional video production is not expected.
How can I best prepare?
As you prepare to submit your Supplemental Application:
- Read the entire application before beginning your responses.
- Review information about the ALP so that you understand the program you are applying to.
- Take some time to reflect on your experiences, interests and goals.
- Prepare your responses before starting the online application.
- Review your responses carefully before submitting them.
- Make sure your application reflects your own experiences, ideas and voice.
- Submit your completed application before the deadine.
NOTE: The Supplemental Application cannot be saved and returned to later. We strongly recommend preparing your responses in advance.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need references?
No. References are not required for the ALP Supplemental Application. - Is there a separate fee to apply?
There is a Supplemental Application fee of CAD $95.12 that is separate from the SFU Application Fee, and it is non-refundable. - Can I use ChatGPT or another generative AI tool?
No. Applicants must not use generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, to generate, rewrite, edit or otherwise assist with their Supplemental Application responses. The Supplemental Application is intended to reflect your own experiences, perspectives, and communication. - Can I prepare my responses before starting the Supplemental Application?
Yes. We encourage applicants to prepare both their video and written responses before beginning the online application. The supplemental questions are available on this webpage. The Supplemental Application cannot be saved and completed later. - Can I save my Supplemental Application and return to it later?
No. The Supplemental Application cannot be saved and returned to later. We recommend reading the full application and preparing your responses before beginning. - What happens if I do not complete the Supplemental Application?
A completed Supplemental Application is required to be considered for admission to the ALP. Applicants who do not submit a completed Supplemental Application by the applicable deadline will not be considered for admission to the program. - Do I need previous legal experience?
No. Previous legal experience is not required to apply to the ALP. - Does my academic record still matter?
Yes. The Supplemental Application is one component of the admission process. Your academic profile will also be considered by the Admissions Committee.
