First SFU Surrey Community Mixer raises funds for student food security

SFU Surrey’s first Community Mixer brought together the region’s business, government and community leaders, donors and alumni, and friends of SFU to “Share the Vibe” and raised more than $17,000 for students struggling to purchase food and everyday essentials – including a $7,525 matching gift from the President’s Priority Fund.

Building on the tradition of the annual President’s Surrey Gala, the Mixer was a reimagined from a traditional sit-down dinner to  an interactive event where guests were able to mingle and connect while enjoying live music, sample a variety of delicious food , and hear from speakers about the university’s impact and future growth and development in Surrey.

“It was a great opportunity for the community to meet and hear from President Joy Johnson in an informal and fun-filled setting and learn about the future of SFU in the region. “The venue and food was amazing! I’m already looking forward to next year’s event,” said Stephen Dooley, Executive Director of SFU Surrey.

The Community Mixer was held in the atrium of SFU’s newest building in Surrey’s city centre – home of the School of Sustainable Energy Engineering. Student and alumni involvement was apparent throughout the event, with food catered by companies such as Bak’d Cookies and Mr. Arancino that got their start through Coast Capital Venture Connection , the longest running entrepreneurship program at SFU. 

The desire to give back was apparent throughout the event. “We’re incredibly grateful to all those who donated. These funds will make a difference by providing grocery gift cards for students who need it most,” said Sofia Janmohamed, Executive Director of Development.
