Purpose

Two (2) awards recognise SFU faculty, staff or students who are making substantial, diverse and sustained contributions to community engagement and outreach by sharing science with the public.

One (1) award recognises SFU faculty or staff who have made a substantial and diverse impact on science communication and policy.

These awards are an important way to highlight, both within SFU and in our surrounding community, SFU people who are engaging the public with science, and in doing so increasing awareness of the key role that science plays in society.

Nominations

Nominations are now open for the 2023 Excellence in Science Public Engagement and Outreach Awards. The deadline for nominations is August 15, 2023.

Nominations will be held for a two year period, so non-recipients from the previous round will be considered in this next round.

Each Faculty of Science Chair is invited to submit one or more nominations, at their discretion, for either an individual or group. Nominations will be held for a two year period, so non-recipients will be considered the following year.

The Awards

Two SFU Faculty of Science: Excellence in Science Public Engagement and Outreach Awards will be presented per year in the two categories of Students ($500) and Faculty/Staff ($1,000). One SFU Faculty of Science: Excellence in Science Public Engagement and Outreach Award: Science Communication and Policy Impact ($1,000) will be presented to an SFU faculty or staff member.

The prize will go to the recipient’s department to be used for public engagement and outreach. (If won by a group such as Let’s Talk Science the cash prize would go to the local LTS program).
