Three Minute Thesis

Hirotoshi Yuzawa, MATH Master's student, presents his 3MT slide on An Exploration In Puzzle Design

Three Minutes - One slide - GO!

The Three Minute Thesis Competition, or 3MT, is an annual event that challenges SFU graduate students to present their research to a general audience, in three minutes, using only one static slide - no animations, videos or music. Each faculty runs its own faculty heat, with the winners going on to compete at the SFU 3MT Final. The winner of the final represents SFU at the Western Regional competition - and possibly National!

3MT is more than a fun competition. Communicating your research idea in a simple, effective way is a valuable skill to practice as you prepare for conferences and poster presentations. Take the opportunity to get expert feedback (and snacks) and win cash prizes. Competitions are judged by a panel of Science faculty from across departments. The People's Choice award is voted by the audience - so make sure to bring your friends and faculty supporters!

This year, some minor props may be allowed if they are necessary to reflect alternative research approaches or cultural context. Also, graduate students in course-based programs may now participate if they have research to share.

Science 3MT Stories

High-placing 3MT competitors from Science share their reflections and advice on crafting an excellent presentation.

Joshua Yu (CHEM)

2025 SFU 3MT Finals: Runner Up

How have your courses, RA-ships, TA-ships, or non-academic school experiences contributed to your academic and/or professional development?

Experiences such as poster and oral presentations have helped me develop an intimate understanding of my project, allowing me to effectively communicate my research to a broader audience. This is just as important as the research itself—after all, research holds little value if you can’t share it with others. For example, the Three Minute Thesis Competition requires me to condense years of research into a three-minute talk for a general audience. This is not only useful for pitching my research, but also for developing effective communication soft skills essential for professional development.

2022 National 3MT Finals: Second Place (PhD thesis) & 2019 Westen Regionals: Third Place (Master's thesis)

SFU PhD Biological Sciences alumnus, Elana Varner, never dreamed that her Three Minute Thesis (3MT) talks on mouse pee would help with her career preparation. But the skills she developed were what she needed to help land a California Council on Science & Technology (CCST) Fellowship placement with the Department of Pesticide Regulation.

2022 SFU 3MT Finals: First Place

What did you find out about yourself and/or your research through your participation?

Streamlining my research on immunology and molecular biology to a concise and comprehensible level was an immense challenge, but surprisingly, an incredibly fulfilling one. The process of conveying complex concepts in an accessible manner was thoroughly enjoyable, and even resulted in me discovering a newfound appreciation for public speaking.

History of 3MT

Developed by The University of Queensland in 2008, the competition challenges higher-degree research students to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance in just three minutes in language appropriate to a general audience. 3MT is not an exercise in trivializing or ‘dumbing-down’ research but forces students to consolidate their ideas and crystallize their research discoveries.

Since its incepetion, the popularity of the competition has increased and 3MT competitions are now held in over 900 universities across more than 85 countries worldwide.
