SFU awards

MSc and PhD student graduate fellowship

Fall application deadline: May/June

Spring application deadline: October

Value:

  • $6,500 for a full fellowship

  • $3,250 for a half fellowship

Eligibility requirements:

  • Full-time master’s or doctoral student, or MPH student completing a thesis at the time and during the term of application

  • Minimum 3.50 CGPA

  • Within first nine semesters of master's program or first 15 semesters of PhD program

  • Students holding major scholarships/fellowships equal to or exceeding $30,000/year are eligible for a maximum of one full competitive GF (equivalent to $6500) per year.

MPH student graduate fellowship

Fall application deadline: May

Value: $3,250

Eligibility requirements:

1. Be an MPH student registered full-time (not on-leave or part-time) during the term that you will hold the award.

2. Be in the second or third term of your MPH at the time of the nomination.

3. Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.67 at the time of the application.

4. Be nominated by an instructor or faculty member for outstanding work/achievement in a class, project or special accomplishment. Calls will go out to instructors to nominate students. If you are nominated for this award, you will be contacted to complete an application.

Travel and minor research award

Fall application deadline: May/June

Spring application deadline: October

Value: up to $2,000 per competition

Eligibility requirements:

  • Full-time master's or doctoral student at the time and during the term of application

  • Minimum 3.50 CGPA

  • Traveling to a conference to attend or present research, or traveling to conduct research

Graduate international research and travel award

Fall application deadline: May/June 

Spring application deadline: October

Value: one award per degree program up to $6,500

Eligibility requirements:

  • Full-time master's or doctoral student at the time and during the term of application

  • Minimum 3.50 CGPA

  • Within first two years of master's program or first three years of PhD program

  • Request for funding meets one of the following criteria where research requires:

    • Necessary travel to informants

    • Travel to natural phenomena

    • Travel to cultural phenomena

    • Use of facilities not available in Western Canada or the Northwestern USA

President’s PhD Scholarship

Application deadline: October for the spring term only

Value: one award per degree program up to $6,500

Eligibility requirements:

  • Full-time doctoral student at the time and during the term of application

  • Minimum 3.50 CGPA

  • Completed fewer than 12 terms of enrolment

  • Completed all degree requirements except the thesis

Graduate student conference support

Value: one award per degree program of up to $600

Eligibility requirements:

  • Full-time master's or doctoral student at the time and during the term of application

Dr. Djavad Mowafaghian Child Health Practice and Research Award

Fall application deadline: May/June

Spring application deadline: October

Value: one award per degree program with an approximate value of $3,000. Budgets exceeding $3,000 will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Pursuing a full-time practicum in child health as part of the MPH program, or;

  • Undertaking travel for fieldwork related to child health as part of thesis research for the MSc or PhD programs, or;

  • Seeking to present MSc or PhD research related to child health at a scholarly conference, or;

  • Seeking to contribute to child health research or practice in a way commensurate with the overall goal of this award

Janes Corbett Faculty and Staff Community Health Practice Award (MPH)

Value: one award per degree program of $1,000

Eligibility requirements:

  • Pursuing a practicum in community health practice as part of the MPH program

Tri-council and donor awards

Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

The Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral awards program gives special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field in Canada.

The Canada Graduate Scholarship-Masters program, the Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral program, and the NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships-Doctoral program give financial support to high calibre Masters and PhD scholars who are studying natural sciences or engineering.

Donor awards

Bursaries and student loans

Bursaries and student loans for all students are administered by SFU's Financial Aid and Awards Office.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Graduate students enrolled full-time

  • Minimum 3.00 CGPA

  • Demonstrated financial need

Emergency funding is also available through the SFU Graduate Student Society and the SFU Financial Aid.

Childcare bursaries are available to graduate students who hold current appointments as a Teaching Assistant, Tutor Marker or Sessional Instructor, and are members of the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU).

TD Bank Financial Group graduate bursary endowments for health sciences

The TD Bank Financial Group supports Canadian students through bursaries—especially in the area of health education. Criteria for this award are:
