POSITION OVERVIEW The Global Strategy Lab is a world-class research unit with a long track record of bridging the gap between research and global health action. Our team advises the world’s governments and organizations like the World Health Organization on how to design laws, policies, and institutions that address transnational health threats and make the world a healthier place for everyone. We are looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow to support the lab’s Public Health Institutions research stream, which analyzes institutional design challenges and policymaking processes using insights from political science, public administration, and international relations. As a staff member, the selected Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute to designing and executing various research projects within the Public Health Institutions research stream. This position represents an opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary and comparative research, work across national borders as part of a globally integrated research team, interact with decisionmakers, and make tangible contributions to ongoing policy processes on pressing health issues. Candidates must have a PhD or be nearing the completion of a PhD.

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW RESPONSIBILITIES

• Collaborate/take the lead on a variety of projects in the Public Health Institutions research stream • Lead research design and project management as needed

• Support/take the lead on grant applications, data collection, data analysis, and manuscript writing across a range of new and existing projects

• Develop academic outputs, including peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and conference presentations • Support integrated and end-of-grant knowledge translation activities

• Actively participate in a dynamic and highly productive team environment

• Communicate effectively with team members, collaborators, and stakeholders

• Supervise Research Assistants and students as needed

• Other duties as required

REQUIREMENTS

• A PhD or nearing completion of a PhD in a related social scientific field (e.g., political science, public administration, public policy, international relations, public health, etc.)

• Work experience in applied social science or policy research

• Experience designing and executing qualitative or mixed-methods research projects

• Strong understanding of political science concepts and theories

• Advanced writing skills with the ability to write clearly, concisely, and quickly for interdisciplinary academic and policy audiences

• Strong ability to work independently and in teams

• Willingness to take initiative and to learn new things

• Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to organize workload, set priorities, and respond effectively to competing demands

• Strong interest in public health institutions research

• Ability to work effectively with sensitivity across barriers such as language, culture, and distance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE (BUT NOT REQUIREMENTS)

• Knowledge of social science survey methods and experience analyzing quantitative social science survey data

• Knowledge of public administration, public health policy, and the policymaking process

• Proficiency in NVivo or other qualitative data analysis software

• Experience working with, and mentoring, undergraduate and graduate research assistants

• Experience preparing SSHRC and CIHR funding applications

• Experience coordinating and managing research projects

• Ability to speak, read, and write in French

COMPENSATION AND TERM OF EMPLOYMENT

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be working remotely until in-person activities resume at the Global Strategy Lab. Once in-person activities resume, they will have the option to work from the University of Ottawa, York University, or to continue working remotely. Annual salary will range from $69,000 to $75,000, depending on the individual’s experience and education. GSL’s commitment to pay equity necessitates that we will not be able to offer a salary outside of the range provided. The successful candidate is expected to work approximately 40 hours per week.
