Job Summary

To provide coordinative and technical support in various tasks related to a Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) funded project entitled The Intersectionality-Based Policy Analysis Framework 2.0: An improved approach for operationalizing the “+” in SGBA+. The project team consists of international experts and knowledge users applying intersectionality in health and social policy areas. The project seeks to strengthen the Intersectionality-Based Policy Analysis Framework (IBPA) (Hankivsky et al. 2012) and develop competencies for rigorously applying it to advance the intersectional analytic process essential to effectively implement Sex and Gender Based Analysis Plus in health research and policy. The project commenced in Fall 2022 and runs for 4.5 years (see more on project goal/objectives in Annex).

The applicant will be a current or incoming Masters or Doctoral student at SFU but work can be completed remotely (on or off campus). The applicant will report directly to the Research Coordinator/PhD Trainee and Principal Investigator (Dr. Olena Hankivsky) on the project, with interactions and liaisons with the project team.

Work Performed

Under the direction of the PI and project coordinator, the RA will:

• Assist with the planning, coordination, and documentation of project activities and events (e.g., stakeholder interviews/consultations/workshops, team meetings, online and in-person etc.)

• Assist with a continuing scoping review of intersectionality-informed tools and frameworks and guidance and development of a tool inventory.

• Assist with updates and information sharing relevant to the project via email, the project website (which will house an online community of practice), and social media.

Minimum Qualifications

• MA or PhD student throughout duration of term contract.

Preferred Qualifications

• Training and/or experience in intersectionality-informed research and/or policy analysis and familiarity with other equity promoting approaches (e.g., gender mainstreaming/gender-based analysis, Indigenous approaches, etc.).

• Experience conducting literature reviews, using academic and non-academic search engines and familiarity with reference and data management systems (e.g., Zotero).

• Project and/or event management experience.

Annex – CIHR Project Goal and Objectives

The goal of the proposed project is to bring together an interdisciplinary team to strengthen and expand the globally recognized Intersectionality-Based Policy Analysis Framework (IBPA) (Hankivsky et al. 2012) and create a best practice guidance document on how to operationalise the component of Sex-and Gender-Based Analysis Plus (SGBA+): intersectionality. The objectives are as follows:

1. Undertake a scoping review, cross-sectoral stakeholder consultations, and key informant interviews to generate new knowledge for a revised IBPA Framework -

2. Create IBPA 2.0 by integrating new evidence, content and improved operational guidance (from objective 1);

3. Apply IBPA 2.0 to priority global health policy issues (e.g. pandemic preparedness and response, budgets for well-being, mental health, and aging) to generate 10 case studies that illustrate how to use the new framework to generate more inclusive and accurate evidence;

4. Build intersectionality-based analysis competencies, including through a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), so that health researchers and policy actors have the knowledge and skills to apply intersectionality; and

5. Implement an integrated KT plan with the support of an Advisory Committee of national and international Expert Researchers and Knowledge Users (KUs), and ensure wide dissemination and uptake of IBPA 2.0 using interactive and web-based mechanisms.
